With over 30 years of international experience, Laura is not just navigating the world of mining but transforming it. From civil engineering beginnings to her current role as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Adriatic Metals Plc, Laura’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, expertise, and visionary leadership. Throughout her career, Laura has worked with some of the world’s top mining companies, including Western Mining Corporation, Newcrest Mining, Mount Isa Mines, and BHP. In 2004, she joined BHP and quickly made her mark. Her impressive roles include Asset President of the EKATI Diamond Mine in Canada, Asset President of Cannington Mine in Queensland, and Asset President of Olympic Dam in South Australia. Each position has sharpened her skills and commitment to innovation, safety, and community development. But Laura’s influence did not stop there as she also served as Chief of staff to the previous CEO of BHP, playing a key role in shaping the company’s strategic direction. As BHP’s chief technical officer, Laura led the charge on technical advancements and sustainable practices that are setting new standards in the mining industry. She is a role model for women in STEM, a voice for sustainable mining practices, and a beacon of change in a traditionally male-dominated field. It’s Tuesday, and today we are digging a little deeper—beyond the minerals, beyond the machinery, to something even more valuable: the people and communities around mining operations. Here are a few inspiring ways the mining industry is creating positive and lasting change: 1️⃣ Health and Wellness Program. Through the Digital Health Impact Accelerator Catalytic Fund (DHIA), launched in 2022, Anglo American American, along with the Anglo American Foundation and partners, pledged $15 million to support Africa’s digital health infrastructure. This initiative empowers over 49 clinic catchments, providing primary healthcare access to 350,000+ people. Key components include smartlockers at clinic locations.The DHIA’s contributions have also provided critical HIV support, aiding 842 men and 717 children and adolescents with psychosocial and medical care. 2️⃣ Education and skills training. AngloGold Ashanti Ghana 's Obuasi Enterprise and Skills Development Centre is making strides as part of their Enterprise Development Programme under the 3-year Social Management Plan. The initiative focuses on equipping local community members with vital skills in various sectors, from mining to entrepreneurship. By providing training and resources, the centre helps empower individuals to start their own businesses and gain meaningful employment, ultimately strengthening the local economy and enhancing community resilience. 3️⃣ Infrastructure and access. Roads, clean water, and safe bridges—these are things we often take for granted, but for communities in Australia. Rio Tinto’s Community Infrastructure Investment has been a game-changer. By building and upgrading essential infrastructure, Rio Tinto has transformed daily life for over 100,000 people. Local businesses are growing, trade is thriving, and new economic paths are opening. Infrastructure is more than physical structures but an opportunity for growth and connection. 4️⃣ Environmental stewardship. In Ghana and Peru, Newmont’s Biodiversity Action Plan is dedicated to something crucial: protecting and restoring nature. Through reforestation and habitat restoration, Newmont has planted over 200,000 trees and is actively preserving local ecosystems. This isn’t just about today’s impact; it’s about building a sustainable tomorrow, one tree and one community at a time. 5️⃣ Small business and entrepreneurship support. In Zambia, Glencore’s Enterprise Development Program is making this possible, funding and mentoring over 500 local entrepreneurs across diverse sectors like retail and agriculture. These small businesses are the heart of communities, bringing stability, jobs, and a stronger economy that endures. Mining’s true legacy is not only in the resources it extracts but it is in the lives it touches and the futures it builds.
