We are pleased to announce our collaboration with the The University of Western Australia for a study tour involving 34 second-year International students majoring in Economics from Meiji Gakuin University, who visited Perth for a 15-week Centre for English Language Teaching program. This initiative marked our first opportunity to introduce an industry engagement session specifically for these Japanese students, allowing them to learn about how a Japanese company operates in Australia and experience a different working culture, particularly with Mitsui as a Japanese company operating on an international scale. This engagement has expanded their knowledge of Mitsui, as many students are already familiar with the company through various advertisements and promotions. We focused on areas of particular interest, such as decarbonisation and consumables. With the cooperation of Outback Carbon ’s Lucy Mulcahy and Shark Bay Salt Pty Ltd's Andrew Parker, we explored our carbon projects, discussing everything from the benefits of forestation to salt production, their markets to applications, and even providing a glimpse into our operations, which broadened their horizons. "We believe this was a very valuable experience for the students to engage with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, enhance their communication skills, and deepen their understanding of Mitsui’s values and activities in Australia," said Mitsutaka Nakao, General Manager of Mitsui’s Perth Office.

Celebrating a decade of supporting the New Colombo Plan! This year, we were excited to host 14 students from the The University of Western Australia, University of Technology Sydney, James Cook University, and the University of Adelaide.
We are proud to celebrate a decade of supporting the New Colombo Plan(NCP) since its inception by the Australian Government in 2014. Over the years, we have been dedicated to providing transformative learning opportunities for students. This year, we welcomed 14 students from various Australian universities to immerse themselves in Mitsui’s corporate ethos and Japan’s industry landscape at a two-week program in June and July. The program included a deep dive into Australia's vital iron ore industry, essential for Japan's steel production, with a visit to JFE Steel East Japan Works in Chiba. The students witnessed the impressive blast furnace and gained valuable insights into Japan's advanced iron manufacturing process. A highlight was their visit to Moon Creative Lab, Mitsui's innovation hub, where they participated in engaging brainstorming sessions using LEGO® bricks to generate innovative business ideas. This experience underscored our commitment to fostering creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset. One student shared, "I am grateful for the enriching cultural and professional development experience with Mitsui & Co. in Japan." We are delighted to contribute to the success of the NCP and to showcase Mitsui & Co.'s dedication to international education and fostering global connections. #Mitsui #NewColomboPlan #InternationalEducation #Australia #Japan JFE Steel Corporation the LEGO Group Mitsui & Co. Congratulations to Ms. Wendy Holdenson for receiving the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation for her outstanding contribution to the promotion of economic relations between Australia and Japan. In 2015, she was appointed a business champion for the Australian government's overseas study program New Colombo Plan. She is a Trustee of the Mitsui Education Foundation, a program run by Mitsui Australia to invite university students to Japan. Since 2020, Wendy has also served on the board of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Australia-Japan Foundation, which aims to advance Australia’s engagement with Japan. MCA Chair and CEO Masato Sugahara shared “Wendy has tirelessly dedicated herself to the Australia-Japan economic partnership. Over the past decade with Mitsui, her stewardship of our operations and the nurturing of next generation’s business leaders has been deservedly recognised in this Commendation.”

On a rainy and chilly Sunday morning, 28th July, the Melbourne team, alongside our friends at Ashurst, took part in National Tree Day, organised by the Yarra City Council and the Merri Creek Management Committee. We were also joined by some delightful little helpers-who added an extra touch of joy and enthusiasm to the day! Despite the weather, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work planting indigenous shrubs, grasses, and flowers to enhance the wetland habitat. It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to our local environment and help restore natural habitats for the community and wildlife. We were then treated to a delicious BBQ lunch provided by the organisers, which was a perfect way to celebrate our efforts. National Tree Day, initiated by Planet Ark in 1996, has grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event, with over 27 million trees planted since its inception. At Mitsui, we are proud to participate in this important initiative annually, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

Last week, we celebrated and bid farewell to one of our longest serving employees Kathleen Varigos as she embarks on her next journey of retirement. Kathy first joined our company in 1985 and since then, has played an integral part in our team and success for the past 39 years. Her exceptional character and contribution has certainly left a mark with not only the company, but also her colleagues who will miss her dearly. To celebrate Kathy’s time with Mitsui, the Melbourne team gathered for an afternoon High Tea in the office along with a dedicated photo wall showcasing some of Kathy’s memories with Mitsui. We couldn’t be more proud of Kathy’s achievement, and the office certainly won’t be the same without her. Congratulations on your retirement Kathy, may you enjoy a happy and healthy retirement ahead.
