The countdown is on for the world to achieve the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. These goals provide a guide for the promotion of systems, practices and policies that will end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. I'm happy to share that I'm spending my free time learning how to change behaviour for sustainable development - a course that will impact me in my role at the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD). This course is taught by Monash University, SDG Academy, BehaviourWorks Australia, Monash Sustainable Development Institute and their team of professors, directors, behavioural scientists and researchers. Thank you for creating such a course, I'm excited to continue learning and apply my learnings in my day-to-day role! Human behaviour is at the heart of the SDGs, and many of the challenges faced by society today. We need to harness behavioural insights, to understand human behaviour, what drives it and what can change it. Working with, and learning from, behavioural scientists will allow us to apply solutions to our challenges that take into consideration human behaviour.

Monash Sustainable Development Institute worked with WWF - Pakistan, HARC and local stakeholders with the support of the Australian Government through the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade under the Australia Pakistan Water Security Initiative, to benchmark the water sensitive performance of Islamabad (Pakistan) using the Water Sensitive Cities (WSC) Index Tool. Over 80 cities in Australia and internationally have used the WSC Index Tool to understand their city’s water-related governance, practices and social capital, and then develop strategies to improve water sensitivity. Islamabad was established in the 1960s as Pakistan’s planned new capital. The new report highlights opportunities for Islamabad to improve its water sensitive cities performance related to: • Fostering committed leadership and cross-sector collaborations • Promoting adaptive infrastructure and multifunctional water assets • Improving water literacy and community involvement in water planning and decision making • Activating connected pleasant green and blue urban spaces. Participants included the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the PCRWR (Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources), the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), the Australian High Commission, Islamabad, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Pakistan, WaterAid, representatives from various NGOs working on urban development and GEDSI inclusion, professors and researchers from different universities and subject specialists. Each participant brought different technical and planning knowledge to help in information sharing and consensus development to rate the 34 indicators.
