Despite our growth in size, project scope, partnerships, and networks, our core approach remains steadfast. We believe in the power of partnerships to blend rigorous research with valuable industry experience, creating powerful solutions to complex problems. What We Do: Our extensive portfolio spans hundreds of projects in collaboration with government, industry, philanthropy and community partners. Our expertise covers a wide range of areas, including: ➡️ Health ➡️ Climate change ➡️ Energy ➡️ Water ➡️ Waste ➡️ Pollution ➡️ Biodiversity ➡️ Biosecurity ➡️ Education ➡️ Social inclusion ➡️ Finance ➡️ Safety ➡️ Organisational change Our Approach: Persuading people is both an art and a science. At BehaviourWorks Australia, we hold that most problems can be addressed by influencing underlying behaviours. Leveraging insights from behavioural science, we help organisations avoid misguided assumptions and identify the most effective interventions. Given the complexity of human behaviour, we employ PhD-qualified researchers from diverse disciplines. Many of our team members have experience in government and industry, making them well-versed in the systems and processes of both the public sector and business. Not all behaviour change interventions work! So how do we avoid some of the most common mistakes? In this short video Kun Zhao provides a snapshot of the magic that happens in the 8th chapter of our new book, Inspiring Change: How to influence behaviour for a better world. Kun talks about different types of behaviour change interventions, mapping drivers and barriers, how to prioritise interventions, and co-design. What a start! For me personally, building this campaign with such a strong foundation of credibility has been absolutely vital. Food waste is a critical and solvable issue, and I wouldn’t want to attempt to speak to or help a nation with anything less than this kind of commitment to evidence. Three years of research, best-practice behavioural science, and rigorously tested creative were non-negotiable in its development. The media’s response to the launch confirms that we are all ready to tackle this challenge together! #TheGreatUnwaste #FoodWaste #BehaviourChange #CreativeImpact Hopeful Monsters Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Mark Boulet BehaviourWorks Australia Whereto Angela Baker, Ph.D. Tumbleturn Marketing Advisory
We’re thrilled to announce that our National Consumer Behaviour Change Campaign, The Great Unwaste, which launched on September 29th, has already gained incredible positive media attention. It’s inspiring to see such strong support for reducing household food waste across the country. Our mission is clear: to offer practical, relatable solutions that empower everyday Australians to make a real impact. The response so far shows that we’re on the right track, and we can’t wait to see this campaign—and it’s grounded in research, evidence-based, positive, solutions-focused messaging—reach even more households. Together with industry, government, and the not-for-profit sector, we’re creating a united front to help Australians waste less and value more. This is just the beginning. Liam Smith is highly regarded in this space having supervised numerous students and projects, that seek to understand how to foster human-nature connections and nature-positive behaviours. ➡ Melissa Hatty, one of Liam's recently completed #PhD students, focused on measuring and promoting nature connections. ➡ Christina Renowden is currently looking at how the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Act is shaping river management and user connections with the river. Melissa and Christina’s skills are needed now more than ever. BehaviourWorks Australia has also been involved in work that has tried to identify what nature-positive behaviours will have the most impact. Two separate pieces of work, led by the esteemed Angela Dean and Matthew Selinske, were: ➡ Measuring nature connections through the Victorian's Valuing Nature work together with the Victorian Government, ➡ Measuring the #biodiversity concerns of Australians and the nature-focused policies they will support, through work with the Biodiversity Council. In addition, through work undertaken by Stefan Kaufman, we have explored how to encourage the protection of nature with key stakeholder groups, such as farmers. Tanya Plibersek John Thwaites

It was a pleasure to attend the first Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney this week where there was a strong focus on the role of data, financial and policy instruments in steering Australia to a #NaturePositive future. Australia has many significant challenges in #biodiversity including the loss of 100 species since colonisation, and over 2000 threatened species... but hopefully this Summit represents a change in direction. As a behavioural scientist, I noted that a recurrent theme was that people have largely become disconnected from nature and that lies at the root of many biodiversity challenges. By fostering a connection with nature, we can realise many of the social, health and environmental benefits and create a platform upon which ambitious ideas and policies are accepted and supported. With an increasingly urbanised population, that is no easy task, and we have much to learn from Indigenous communities both in Australia and overseas. We need to look at how we can: ➡ Create spillover from one nature-positive behaviour to another, ➡ Encourage nature-positive actions within and by organisations, ➡ Use new behavioural science approaches to diagnose systems and identify platforms for change. I hope the behavioural science community can rally behind the seeds planted to find ways to use our skills to complement other work and, ultimately to help move toward a new nature-positive normal! The answer is "Belief in controlling random events". This cognitive bias leads people to overestimate their ability to control events. [Langer, 1975] https://lnkd.in/engMpjFd

Two days after the US election we will discuss #misinformation and #disinformation at #TheChangeRoom. What's the difference between them? How does fake news work and who's behind it? And most importantly, what can we do to cut through it? We can explain. Fake news isn't new, but it's been turbocharged by screens like the one you're looking at now. At #TheChangeRoom we'll share the latest on how Australians are mis, dis or accurately informed and why our brains are wired to jump to conclusions (even when they're wrong).
