NACOE is a targeted R&D initiative of the Qld Department of Transport and Main Roads and Australian Road Research Board
About us
The National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACOE) is a joint initiative by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB). The purpose of the partnership between TMR and ARRB is to unlock innovation and maximise knowledge transfer, delivering savings through smarter engineering and efficiency gains on a national scale. Since 2013, NACOE has driven savings and enhanced national technical capability in transport and road asset engineering through: • Unlocking innovation • Implementing international best practice • Translating new knowledge into practice Since then, NACOE have delivered and made public quality research results with financial benefits to the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Programme (QTRIP). Through a multi-year committed resourced Program, NACOE will drive efficiency through a focus on road infrastructure-related research. The Program provides benefits to the Australian road industry by delivering research to improve best practises and enables effective use of innovative materials to translate new knowledge into practice. The NACOE program runs on a rolling four-year basis, with projects generally spanning one to three years. The program relies on the input and collaboration of the Queensland Department of Transport, ARRB, and Main Roads and industry personnel to develop ideas for projects across the four key discipline areas of pavements, asset management, structures and other (network operations, road safety and heavy vehicle management). Any suggestions for projects can be submitted through the NACOE website, at NACOE.com.au or through the NACOE email address info@NACOE.com.au

Come and say hello to the NACOE and NTRO team at the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads Engineering, Innovation and Technology Forum this week in Brisbane!
NTRO is excited to be an exhibitor and to be presenting as part of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Engineering, Innovation and Technology Forum in Brisbane this week. The Engineering, Innovation and Technology Forum is a one-of-a-kind event. It focuses on cutting edge research, innovations delivering practical outcomes, and new technologies that will change the way we work. It’s a unique opportunity for industry representatives and departmental officers to come together and learn about the critical knowledge and technologies that will keep Queensland at the forefront of the transport sector. Come and say hello to the NTRO team at our booth at the Forum this week, and find out what we do, how we are innovating, and how we can help you. There’s also information on our joint initiative with TMR – the National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACOE). And there’s plenty of merch, flyers and QR codes outlining our capabilities to get the conversation started.

A win for NACOE and Recycling at the AustStab Awards! Congratulations to NACOE researchers Dr Negin Zhalehjoo (NTRO) and Meera Creagh (TMR), winners of Aust Stab’s Award of Excellence – Industry Excellence in Consulting, Research or Education for their work ‘Using Recycled Materials in Stabilised Pavements’. Further, a huge congratulations to Damian Volker (TMR) and Dr Didier Bodin (NTRO) for their highly commended research into the ‘Performance of Foamed Bitumen Stabilised Materials under Laboratory Simulated Field Conditions’. These awards recognise the leading research that NACOE undertakes as part of TMR’s continuous improvement of its specifications and guidelines. The rollout of this research will provide sustainability benefits to all projects that use TMR’s technical documents. The awards are a testament to NACOE’s dedication, innovation, and expertise in pavement engineering. We’re proud to be at the forefront of developing sustainable practices for the industry. NACOE (Department of Transport and Main Roads) and WARRIP (Main Roads Western Australia) investigated using recycled plastics in asphalt, geosynthetics, and even traffic cones. Recycled plastics in asphalt show promise for some applications in place of conventional materials. Initial environmental, health and safety studies appear promising, and the research indicates a potential solution for plastic waste in road infrastructure. Watch the full video here and visit the NACOE and WARRIP websites to stay tuned for further research (links provided in the comments). Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/gpsZpmJA

Moisture Control Still Key for Granular Pavements with Binders New research suggests that treating granular materials with a small percentage of binder without any associated mix design may not necessarily reduce the risk of premature moisture-related damage occurring. The research found that the moisture content (i.e. Degree of Saturation or “DoS”) of granular materials modified with small quantities of cementitious binders without any accompanying mix design needs to be controlled during construction, similar to the requirements for unbound pavement layers in Transport and Main Roads’ specification MRTS05. Best Practice in the Quality Assurance of Pavement Layers and Subgrade. Ongoing NACOE research is exploring alternative quality assurance methods for pavements and subgrades. The current density-based approach to earthworks control has limitations. NACOE's 5-year project investigated alternatives! 1. Lightweight Deflectometer (LWD) emerged as a promising alternative QA method. 2. LWD offers faster results and a more direct measure of in-situ modulus. 3. The project developed a methodology for using LWD in construction QC. 4. This methodology can be adapted for other similar technologies. 5. The project also proposed amendments to MRTS04 and a detailed technical note. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gi8HQUxu
