About us
The National Justice Project is a grassroots not-for-profit legal service fearlessly fighting injustice. Alongside our courageous clients, we hold governments to account and advocate for permanent policy and law reform to help eradicate systemic discrimination. With a focus on First Nations health justice, police misconduct, prisons and youth detention and justice for refugees and asylum seekers, NJP also tackles systemic discrimination through its client-centred advocacy, education programs and collaborative partnerships.

NSW police an ‘escalating factor’ in mental health crisis call outs, internal review finds. This is why the National Justice Project is leading a national campaign to advocate for appropriate first responders instead of police. At a recent forum with Justice and Equity Centre (formerly the Public Interest Advocacy Centre) Redfern Legal Centre and Aboriginal Legal Service we explored avenues for change and accountability for police responses to mental health incidents. We unanimously agreed the current system and responses to acute mental health incidents are broken and, at their worst, are causing harm and death. Police do not have the training, skills, or experience to serve as first responders in situations where a health or social response is needed. https://bit.ly/4d77pGl

Landmark settlements for children detained in Nauru sends a message to the government. National Justice Project solicitor Emma Hearne: "We have put them on notice - now asylum seekers are again being sent to Nauru - that Australia cannot inflict abuse and neglect upon refugees in detention without being held to account." https://lnkd.in/gT-U2sXf
