Delivering measurement policy, science and regulation for a fair, safe, health Australia.
About us
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is Australia’s measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, and physical measurement. Our work supports #Measurement for a fair, safe, healthy Australia. We develop and maintain Australia’s primary measurement standards to deliver internationally recognised measurement expertise to Australian industry covering calibrations, chemical and biological analyses such as food and environmental testing, sports drug and forensic drug testing, and training in specific measurement techniques. We also provide support and advice on measurements made for legal purposes, help industries develop new measurement methods and administer Australia’s national trade measurement system. A division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR), NMI comprises a multi-disciplinary team of over 400 people across Australia. We focus on priority sectors of the economy where investment in measurement can benefit industry, trade and government. We deliver practical measurement solutions to help address Australia’s societal and economic challenges in sectors including health, environment, energy, food and agriculture, security and trade. We work collaboratively with researchers and industry to support Australia’s competitive edge using measurement to improve productivity through enhanced process efficiency and control, waste reduction, and product research, development and optimisation. MORE INFORMATION Headquartered at Lindfield (Sydney). NMI operates from a number of sites around Australia with facilities at North Ryde (Sydney), Port Melbourne (Victoria) and Canberra (ACT). The National Measurement Institute, Australia thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the #GSGStemExpo at Parliament House. What a fantastic way to celebrate #ScienceWeek and to showcase the diverse #STEMcareer options available at NMI to students and #STEM qualified people of all ages. 👨🔬 👩🔬 🔬 ⚖
Last Thursday, the Government Scientists Group hosted the inaugural GSG STEM Expo at Australian Parliament House, which was a wonderful showcase of the diverse STEM careers and activities that exist within government. The event saw several government ministers and parliamentarians rubbing shoulders with students and members of the public as more than 1500 people came through the Expo’s doors. I was delighted to see such enthusiasm for STEM and the students that I spoke with left me feeling confident that our future was in good hands! A big thank you to all the GSG exhibitors and speakers for making this such an engaging event. I would particularly like to thank Australia’s first female astronaut, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, whose talk inspired the next generation to dream of exploring new horizons. #GSGSTEMExpo #GSG #DoWhatYouLove #showusyourSTEM
