Friday afternoon in Singapore Wearing High Vis Inspiration!!! Not three phrases that you would normally see together but that was my experience last Friday. The largest Bus Company in Singapore SBS Transit Ltd with 10,000 staff, hosted James Mitchell and I to see first hand what a tripartite arrangement can achieve within a workplace. It reaffirmed our research findings that unions, operators and the government need to sit together to design and take ownership for the effective delivery of public transport services. It also hardened my resolve that procurement models needs to change. All current international models, that promote a race to the bottom and focus on price only are flawed and do not represent the value of effective public transport to communities. This needs to change, as currently any savings are being born by the stress and heartache of drivers trying to do their job in incredibly difficult conditions. It makes me sad that we are not talking about the human cost of current procurement policy. Deep breath... back to inspiration! I would like to acknowledge the expertise and skilful approach of SBS Transit Ltd who use the foundations of tripartite arrangements and build collaboration and innovation into their service delivery through smart tech options and human centred approaches. Thanks Don Leow, IHRP-SP and the entire SBS Transit Ltd team who listened and patiently answered our questions long past 5pm on a Friday. A huge thank you to Claire Mear for organising and of course thanks to APTIA & Bus Industry Confederation for supporting Navigate Work to do this research.
