🌲 🌳This International Day of Forests’ theme is “Forests and Food” 🌳 🌲 Not only are forests home to the vast majority of the world’s biodiversity and store more carbon than is in the atmosphere, but they are crucial for food security, supporting the livelihoods of billions of people around the world. Forests are critical for agriculture by providing homes for pollinators, helping keep the soil healthy, retaining water, and acting as a natural barrier against wind for crops. They also play a vital role for water, with forested watersheds providing fresh water to more than 85% of the world’s major cities. Across our New Forests business, we have a deep belief that investment into our world’s forests is central in supporting regional economies, powering rural communities, and contributing to the transition to a sustainable future. As a key part of our 2030 vision, we aim to ensure that our strategies create climate-positive and nature-positive landscapes, that integrate conservation, restoration, and sustainable production. Happy International Women’s Day 2025 from all of us at New Forests. Operating in a sector with historically low levels of gender diversity, we’re passionate about supporting women to grow their careers in investment management, forestry and agriculture, and believe that by having a more diverse workplace ourselves, we can be a stronger, more sustainable business. Bruce King, Head of New Agriculture, spoke with Florence Chong-Pearton at IPE Real Assets to discuss New Forests’ plans for its agricultural arm. In Australia, 58% of the Australian land mass (446 million hectares) is used for farming, which makes agriculture a vital sector for sustainable development. New Agriculture manages more than 3 million hectares of agricultural land and that will continue to grow in 2025. 🗣️“To be able to own and manage such a large parcel of landscape does give us an ability to play an outsized role in improving the land with regenerative agriculture,” says Bruce King, head of New Agriculture.   Australia offers a fertile environment for institutional investors like New Agriculture because it is a liquid market. New Forests is proud to announce the final close of our Australia New Zealand Landscapes and Forestry Fund (ANZLAFF), raising approximately A$600 million from institutional investors from across Europe and Asia-Pacific, including three new investors.    ANZLAFF offers investors unique exposure to forest, land, carbon, and agriculture opportunities across Australia and New Zealand. Among the exciting new investors in the Fund’s final close are Evli, an investment management business spanning Finland and Sweden; Kyushu Electric Power, a Japanese energy company; and a German insurance company. The final close comes 12 months after New Forests announced the first close of ANZLAFF with commitments from five investors including Swedish pension fund Andra AP-fonden (AP2); German pension group Bayerische Versorgungskammer (BVK); the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC); along with an Australian and a German insurer.
