This is official ! Today at the United Nations 🇺🇳Palais des Nations, the Geneva Pledge for gender-responsive climate action was formally endorsed by more than 20 Member States, backed up by 60+ leaders from UN Permanent Missions, international and civil society organizations. Yesterday was a day of grief. Today is a day of hope. The room was filled with positive energy, infused by the amazing spirit of multilateralism, planting the seeds for more collective action for climate, peace and gender equity. As Co-Chair of the IGC Climate Impact Group, together with Ambassador Dr. Katharina Stasch, Permanent Representative, Germany, Jagan Chapagain International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, Cristian Guillermet Fernandez , Permanent Representative, Costa Rica, we came with a message hope, and a message of urgency: the urgency to unite more than ever around our shared values and commitment to champion inclusion and diversity in the climate space. We had been working on this rather intensively for the last months with the amazing support of Hannah Reinl (she/her) from the International Gender Champions Secretariat. We were truly humbled and submerged by the positive energy and the number of leaders who showed up on the day, eager to sign the Pledge. The pledge’s six Common Principles include: 1️⃣ Champion equitable representation 2️⃣ Advocate for gender-responsive climate finance 3️⃣ Integrate strategies to break down silos 4️⃣ Base decisions on gender-responsive analysis and data 5️⃣ Push for legal and institutional reforms 6️⃣ Promote a care perspective benefiting people and planet. The National Foundation for Australian Women welcomes the announcement by the Assistant Minister for Women, Kate Thwaites, on 29 October 2024 that the Australian Government has finalised a new set or agreements for five National Women’s Alliances. These organisations play a crucial role in coordinating and supporting women’s organisations and feminist movements in Australia and have done so since 2012. The new arrangements represent some continuity, but also disruption to the sector. Jane Madden, President of NFAW said: “The loss of the Equality Rights Alliance, which decided not to continue, will be missed. NFAW stands ready to work in close collaboration with the new Working with Women Alliance, led by the YWCA of Canberra. We look forward to participating to ensure the new Alliance is established on feminist principles of collegiality, participation, and openness”. NFAW expects that working with the new alliance will help to strengthen and hold the government to account for the Implementation of the Working for Women: A Strategy for Gender Equality announced on the 7 March 2024. The recent refusal by the Government to include any questions in the 2026 Census relating to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression has been unedifying and distressing. The Government’s assertion that they were seeking to avoid divisive debates about a sensitive topic has backfired badly and exacerbated exactly that sense of exclusion amongst Australia’s LGBTQIA+ community. The National Foundation for Australian Women has been following these discussions with concern. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has spent careful time and effort in consulting the LGBTQIA+ communities and expert stakeholders on the framing of questions for the Census, only to have been overridden by their political leaders. This morning there may be some grudging inclusion of one question relating to sexuality, but this again ignores the diversity of trans, intersex and gender fluid communities. While this is a small step forward, it flies in the face of the Government’s own guidelines published just in July that encourages all research to consider “sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation at all stages of the research project”. This political interference in science has further marginalised a community that is far too regularly used as a political football, and will prevent accurate health and social policy work. The National Foundation for Australian Women calls on politicians to reverse their interference and allow for the first time the Australian Census to properly count the LGBTQIA+ community. Each year, the National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW) coordinates a group of gender experts to analyse the Federal Budget, and share what it means for women. It’s integral yet unpaid work, as so much work in the women’s movement is! This year I once again worked on the social security analysis, and once again we found that social policy is leaving women behind. Tinkering around the edges of a broken system is not enough to keep women safe and out of poverty. But there are some glimmers of hope: super on paid parental leave is a win, as is increased work hour flexibility for people receiving a carer payment.
