The National Foundation for Australian Women welcomes the announcement by the Assistant Minister for Women, Kate Thwaites, on 29 October 2024 that the Australian Government has finalised a new set or agreements for five National Women’s Alliances. These organisations play a crucial role in coordinating and supporting women’s organisations and feminist movements in Australia and have done so since 2012. The new arrangements represent some continuity, but also disruption to the sector. Jane Madden, President of NFAW said: “The loss of the Equality Rights Alliance, which decided not to continue, will be missed. NFAW stands ready to work in close collaboration with the new Working with Women Alliance, led by the YWCA of Canberra. We look forward to participating to ensure the new Alliance is established on feminist principles of collegiality, participation, and openness”. NFAW expects that working with the new alliance will help to strengthen and hold the government to account for the Implementation of the Working for Women: A Strategy for Gender Equality announced on the 7 March 2024. The recent refusal by the Government to include any questions in the 2026 Census relating to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression has been unedifying and distressing. The Government’s assertion that they were seeking to avoid divisive debates about a sensitive topic has backfired badly and exacerbated exactly that sense of exclusion amongst Australia’s LGBTQIA+ community. The National Foundation for Australian Women has been following these discussions with concern. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has spent careful time and effort in consulting the LGBTQIA+ communities and expert stakeholders on the framing of questions for the Census, only to have been overridden by their political leaders. This morning there may be some grudging inclusion of one question relating to sexuality, but this again ignores the diversity of trans, intersex and gender fluid communities. While this is a small step forward, it flies in the face of the Government’s own guidelines published just in July that encourages all research to consider “sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation at all stages of the research project”. This political interference in science has further marginalised a community that is far too regularly used as a political football, and will prevent accurate health and social policy work. The National Foundation for Australian Women calls on politicians to reverse their interference and allow for the first time the Australian Census to properly count the LGBTQIA+ community. LinkedIn asked me to share my best advice for young women entering the workforce, so here are a few thoughts: - Ensure you have a mentor to guide you and help you navigate your new workplace. - Build relationships by introducing yourself to new people daily within the organization. - Demonstrate initiative by proactively seeking opportunities for growth and development. - Cultivate a habit of gratitude to maintain a positive mindset and appreciate the good things in your life. - View obstacles and challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. - Surround yourself with supportive friends who cheer you on and motivate you. - Get involved in charitable activities within your organization or propose one to give back to the community. - Avoid engaging in gossip to maintain a professional reputation. - Choose to be around positive individuals who genuinely support your success. - Pursue your passions, stay motivated, and remember to take time for self-care every day. As the quote goes, "There are those who dream and wake up, and there are those who turn their dreams into reality. Who do you aspire to be?" #LinkedInNewsAustralia #LinkedInNewsAustralia

National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW) reposted this
Each year, the National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW) coordinates a group of gender experts to analyse the Federal Budget, and share what it means for women. It’s integral yet unpaid work, as so much work in the women’s movement is! This year I once again worked on the social security analysis, and once again we found that social policy is leaving women behind. Tinkering around the edges of a broken system is not enough to keep women safe and out of poverty. But there are some glimmers of hope: super on paid parental leave is a win, as is increased work hour flexibility for people receiving a carer payment. Both of which will disproportionately impact women. Check out the NFAW website for great analysis across each portfolio area. https://lnkd.in/d6E_DRAV

The challenge of achieving gender equality is a monumental one, but we must continue to strive towards it. According to some measures, it will take 131 years to reach full parity globally. That's why it's essential to have strong leaders who can advocate for change and outline a vision for achieving gender parity. Stephanie Copus Campbell, Australia's Ambassador for Gender Equality, is one such leader who is well placed to do just that. Recently, NFAW celebrated the annual Pamela Denoon Lecture, where Stephanie Copus Campbell gave the keynote address. and inspired all attending with her brilliance, passion and vision for leadership on gender equality within the Australian Government and multilateral organizations. Prior to her current role, Stephanie Copus Campbell worked across the public, private and philanthropic sectors, including as a founding Director on the Femili PNG Board providing services to family and sexual violence survivors. If you were not able to attend this evening you can watch the keynote address here; https://lnkd.in/gYSrZnCM The Pamela Denoon Lecture is a partnership between the Denoon Family, the National Foundation for Australian Women, and the ANU Gender Institute. Achieving gender parity will take a community, and we're excited to hear Stephanie Copus Campbell's insights on how we can all work together to make it happen. NFAW thank the Denoon family for their years of support in honour of Pamela Denoon one of our early trailblazers on gender equality here in Australia.
