NT Shelter is pleased to release our 2023-24 Annual Report. This report reflects our commitment to advocating for appropriate, affordable and accessible housing for all people of the Northern Territory. The NT Shelter AGM 2024 was held this week. We thank Frances Paterson-Fleider for her tenure as President of NT Shelter. We also thank Dr. Paul Royce for his time as Treasurer. Frances and Paul, your leadership, commitment and vision have made a lasting impact on NT Shelter and we are pleased that you will remain on the Board as Board Members. Join us in welcoming Craig Kelly, CEO of Anglicare NT as incoming President of NT Shelter and Andrea Keke, State Manager of AOD and Homelessness at the Salvation Army NT as incoming Treasurer. We also welcome Rob Lutter, CEO at St Vincent de Paul Society (NT) Inc to the NT Shelter Board. Congratulations! New Board Members join our dedicated Board of Management comprising Anne Gawen GAICD, Vice President, Jean Ah Chee, Secretary, and Board Members, Jayne Lloyd, Harley Dannatt and Michael Rotumah. The NT Shelter team also thank Sarah Thurgood, Fred Docking, Chris Hammond and Shaun Pearce. who finished with the Board of Management in 2023-24. It's Anti-Poverty Week and Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) have released their Cost of Living Factsheets. We were glad to collaborate with NTCOSS on their asks on housing, including ensuring that renting in the NT is fair, safe and certain. As Head of Operations, Annie Taylor, said: "Almost 50% of the NT population are renters and the Residential Tenancies Act plays a crucial role in safeguarding the rights of NT renters and landlords alike. We need to bring the NT Act in line with other jurisdictions by ensuring minimum standards for rental premises and the establishment of an independent bond board."

The Board of NT Shelter is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Annie Taylor as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 2 December 2024. Ms. Taylor, who has been with NT Shelter for three years and has served as Head of Operations for the past six months, will succeed Mr Peter McMillan, who will be stepping down after leading the organisation for the past 7 years. Frances Paterson-Fleider, President of NT Shelter, expressed her confidence in Ms Taylor’s ability to lead the organisation into a new and exciting era, with significant investment flagged for social and affordable housing and frontline homelessness services. “Annie has demonstrated great leadership and commitment during her time in Central Australia with NT Shelter, particularly in her role as Head of Operations. Her extensive collaboration, communications and advocacy skills, outstanding personal traits and alignment with the values of NT Shelter make her the ideal person to take us forward,” said Ms Paterson-Fleider. “The Board also wishes to express its gratitude to Peter McMillan and congratulate him on the outcomes he has secured on behalf of our member organisations since 2017. He has been instrumental in advancing the organisation’s advocacy efforts and raising public awareness around homelessness and housing affordability in the Northern Territory”, Ms Paterson-Fleider said. It has been a big couple of days at the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Homelessness Conference in Adelaide. It's always great to catch up with Shelter Network colleagues including John Engeler, Emma Greenhalgh, Jackson Hills, Travis Gilbert, Fiona Caniglia, Lucia Savini, and Dr. Alice Clark. Hearing Northern Territory voices and seeing NT artwork on a national stage was a highlight. Skye Thompson, what an incredible presentation on mobility as a cultural right. Jamie-Leigh Barnard and the talented artists from Studio Off The Street (The Salvation Army Australia) well done on the beautiful, impromptu art studio in the exhibition space. As always, an informative few days. #GatheringMomentum.
