Today, we are honoured to shine a spotlight on our colleague, Renee L. whose dedication is transforming Indigenous AOD treatment nationwide. A proud Dja Dja Wurrung and Ngurai Illum Wurrung woman from Victoria, Renee is breaking down misconceptions about First Nations AOD use. She is leading the way in embedding culturally safe practices that integrate Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) into The Salvation Army’s AOD service delivery across Australia. Renee shares, “Really, AOD issues are not a part of First Nations culture; they are the result of colonisation, dispossession, trauma, and ongoing systemic inequalities.” Her innovative approach ensures that our services are delivered with the utmost respect and understanding, paving the way for genuine recovery and cultural safety. Thank you, Renee, for your unwavering commitment to living, loving, and fighting for a better future for our Indigenous communities. 📖 If you want to learn more about Renee’s work, https://lnkd.in/gJDvamPN

Evacuation centres have now closed. Over the past seven days, The Salvation Army has supported 13 evacuation centres across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales, providing 8227 meals and refreshments to first responders and residents displaced by Cyclone Alfred. Our teams are now working alongside state government recovery hubs, supporting ongoing recovery efforts. While supplies have been stretched, our team remains resilient. As our volunteer Kevin shared, “We make do with what we have though, we are being very resourceful. Council has brought some in some supplies, and we are still able to put out nice meals for people.” Times like these are challenging, but we’re incredibly grateful to our dedicated volunteers and supporters who make this work possible❤️ #CycloneAlfred #TheSalvationArmy #Salvos #EmergencyServices

At The Salvation Army, we believe in the power of transformation—both in our communities and within our own team. This International Women’s Day, we are proud to shine a light on Mounika Gudapati, an inspiring example of women’s rights, equality, and empowerment in action. Mounika’s journey began with a volunteer role in IT, and within just a month, she secured a full-time position—quickly earning two promotions along the way. Her academic excellence, crowned by a master’s degree from RMIT University, led her to serve as Women’s Officer for the RMIT Students Union in 2020. There, she moderated a Women in STEM webinar, uniting leaders from across the field and launching flagship campaigns that showcased the vast opportunities in technology. At The Salvation Army, Mounika not only initiated our International Women’s Day 2023 online campaign within IT but also actively contributes to Women in Tech webinars across Melbourne and attends key industry conferences. Her dedication to amplifying female voices in tech is matched only by her passion for the arts—founding a dance school that celebrates Indian culture and inspires women of all ages to express themselves through movement. Mounika’s story is a powerful reminder that when we empower individuals, we uplift entire communities. Her ongoing question, “Why not amplify women’s presence in technology?” drives our shared mission to create inclusive spaces where every talent can shine. Photo: This year’s International Women’s Day theme is accelerating action. Here she is giving the official #IWD2025 pose a go! #TheSalvationArmy #Salvos #WomenInTech #Empowerment #Equality #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

As preparations continue for Cyclone Alfred to make landfall in parts of Queensland and NSW, The Salvation Army is providing immediate relief to people forced to leave their homes. Our teams are in nine evacuation centres, offering meals, emotional support and emergency assistance, with more teams on standby. “We will remain in communities for the long haul, not just in the initial emergency response but throughout both short- and long-term recovery phases,” says Major Bruce Harmer from The Salvation Army. We are grateful for the generous support from our partners, including Woolworths Supermarkets and The NAB Foundation, for taking our Cyclone Alfred Appeal contribution of $600,000 drawn from the Red Shield Appeal up to $1 million on launch. The Cyclone Alfred disaster is anticipated to have long-term impacts, and we’re committed to walking alongside communities as they rebuild ❤️ Read the full media release: https://lnkd.in/gUAH4j_S

As predictions of when Cyclone Alfred will make landfall change, we remain on standby across areas where impact is anticipated. Our teams have been busy over the last 48 hours, preparing meals, serving at evacuation centres and providing psychological support for people who are nervously waiting for the impact of Cyclone Alfred to unfold. It will be an anxious night for thousands of people across New South Wales and Queensland tonight – The Salvation Army is already at work now, on ground and we are ready to activate our disaster response teams nationally to meet the scale of the crisis. Tonight, we pray for communities affected and hope that tomorrow brings good news.
