Orange Aboriginal Medical Service (OAMS)

OAMS in the Community OAMS supported the recent Women's Gathering held at Flat Rock, near Oberon. During the weekend up to 130 women and children attend, travelling from various locations including Narromine, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Nelson Bay, Brisbane, Bathurst, Oberon, O’Connell, Sydney and Penrith. Participants ages varied from 2 weeks to 80 years old. Our Women's Gathering facilitators included well respected Elders Aunty Iris Reid, Aunty Marg Pearce and Aunty Coke Glasson. The Platypus dance was facilitated by Casey Naden and Ty Towney.

OAMES warmly welcomes Burhan and Aarkash to our Bagaray-Bang Medical Clinic. Burhan and Aarkash are with us to complete their course related rural placement as part of their studies with Western Sydney University, School of Medicine. Western Sydney University

OAMS research partnerships. Recently, our OAMS Lunch Club had a visit from Sharynne and Emily-Jane as part of their CSU Research project being conducted at OAMS. And they brought along books! Charles Sturt University

OAMS in the community. OAMIES Casey, Bilingarra Bagurany Barraminya Suicide Prevention & Aftercare, Care & Recovery Lead and Adam, Shared Services & Partnerships Manager took part in a careers speakers panel at the Kinross Wolaroi School recently. Casey and Adam yarned with the students about their roles and experiences at OAMS and joined with other deadly speakers in talking about preparing for life after school.

We loved being part of the 2024 Koori Knockout! Congrats to WAC on a back to back win. See you all in 2025.

OAMS in the community. Adam and Mel our Closing the Gap team, recently visited Bletchington Public School to celebrate International Literacy Day with our young mob and community. They both gave book readings and cooked up a feed! The Closing the Gap literacy and numeracy target is to halve the gap for Indigenous children in reading, writing and numeracy within a decade (by 2018).

Anna, Walu‑win Manager/Diabetes Educator and Josh, Accredited Exercise Physiologist/Walu‑win Lead from our walu-win centre hosted Dan and Chris from Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) recently in preparation for the start of the new NeuroMoves program. We will be seeing more of Chris here at OAMS in his role as peer support.

The Wala Ma Nha Yali Nya Early Years Children & Families team recently made the trip to Meeanjin Brisbane to engage in the 7th National Child Protection Forum. The team met lots of other ACCO’s and service providers working in early intervention, family support and family preservation and listened to deadly key note speakers from all across Australia and also New Zealand.
