Community Services

Open Table is working to connect communities through equitable access to fresh and nutritious food, with no food wasted.

About us

Open Table is a charitable organisation with a purpose of preventing food insecurity and food waste. We use food that would otherwise go to waste to share free, fresh food through our regular community lunches and food relief programs. Throughout the pandemic we shared 15,000 free food parcels with people in need and diverted more than 55 tonnes of food from landfill. We also run informative workshops, cooking classes and demonstrations that focus on practical ways for people to reduce their individual food waste.

We are so excited about this new cookbook for university students that is in the works! Collaborating with other likeminded small and mighty organisations is the best way to make a big impact on our community and means that we can get relevant education about food waste reduction and eating healthy on a budget out there in a way that fosters connection - watch this space!

"I learnt to be more confident in going off-script for a recipe and opting for alternatives and working with what I have at home" This is some feedback we got recently from one of our participants that recently completed our cooking classes for university students at Kathleen Symes Library City of Melbourne - we absolutely love that we were able to assist this student to feel more confident in the kitchen and we just know that this skill will be so impactful for their future health and wellbeing!

Last night we finished up our cooking classes with university students at Kathleen Symes Library in Carlton 🤗 Guided by our experienced facilitator Melanie Ryan they have been deep diving into learning how to cook with different types of produce and substitute seasonal vegetables - the students have been curious and eager to learn all they can about cooking healthy meals from scratch while reducing food waste! The ability for these students to connect over food also fostered a sense of community and "family dinner" 🥘 vibes that many of these students said they are missing right now - thanks to #cityofmelbourne and #kathleensymeslibray for supporting us!
