🚢 Leading the Charge in #Decarbonisation: A Success Story from Aurora Expeditions 🗺️ At Trace, we’ve witnessed how an Expedition & Cruise company with a strong vision and commitment can drive significant change in the industry. Despite the challenges posed by external factors like the current fuel requirements of marine vessels, Aurora is investing substantial time and resources into ambitious reduction plans, leading the way in decarbonisation within the expedition cruise industry. 🌍 The Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average, creating urgent challenges for industries operating in this fragile environment. What’s truly inspiring is how Aurora Expeditions is not just meeting these challenges head-on but is also emerging as a thought leader in the space. Their commitment to sustainability and innovation is setting new standards for the entire industry. This is exactly the kind of forward-thinking approach we believe every company should adopt. We’ve had the privilege of working with Sasha Buch and supporting Aurora on this journey, and we’re excited to see where they go next. 👉 If you’re ready to elevate your sustainability efforts, you can draw inspiration from the pioneering steps taken by Aurora Expeditions. 🌏 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Here's what you need to know! Two weeks ago, #Australia passed a ground breaking mandatory climate reporting legislation, requiring large and medium-sized companies, along with certain financial institutions, to disclose their climate-related financial risks and opportunities starting from the 1st of January, 2025. ℹ️ Key Components of the Disclosure Structure: 1️⃣ Governance: ● Board Oversight: Disclose how your board oversees climate-related risks and opportunities. ● Management's Role: Outline how management assesses and manages these risks. 2️⃣ Strategy: ● Climate-Related Risks and Opportunities: Identify short, medium, and long-term climate risks and opportunities. ● Impact on Business: Explain how these factors impact your business strategy and financial planning. ● Resilience: Assess the resilience of your strategy under different climate scenarios, including a 1.5°C global warming scenario. 3️⃣ Risk Management: ● Identifying and Assessing Risks: Describe your processes for identifying and assessing climate-related risks. ● Integration: Detail how these risks are integrated into your overall risk management framework. 4️⃣ Metrics and Targets: ● Metrics: Disclose the metrics used to assess climate-related risks and opportunities. ● GHG Emissions: Report Scope 1, Scope 2, and where appropriate, Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. ● Targets: Share the targets set for managing these risks and opportunities, and your performance against them. 5️⃣ Scenario Analysis: ● Climate Scenarios: Conduct scenario analysis considering at least two scenarios - one limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C and another exceeding 2°C. Integrate this analysis into your strategy and risk management. 🍃 Why Does This Matter? 🔸Climate Risks: Understand the physical and transition risks that could impact your business—from extreme weather events to new regulations and market shifts. 🔹Climate Opportunities: Explore opportunities for resource efficiency, energy transition, innovation, and improved access to capital. This legislation is a major step in Australia's journey towards a sustainable future, providing businesses with the framework to not only manage climate risks but also to seize opportunities in the transition to a net-zero economy. ____________________ Take the first step now: 🔎 Dive into our dedicated Blog article and learn more > https://lnkd.in/ez6VNwvg  💻 Register for our exclusive Webinar: 10 Oct | 13:00 AEST > https://lnkd.in/dFRDx_9J Is your business ready to comply? 📊 Unveiling the reality of Emissions Reporting: Gross vs. Net Emissions The debate over how emissions are reported is heating up, and the chart below from Bloomberg Green highlights a critical issue: unbundled renewable energy certificates (RECs) are masking the true emissions footprints of major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta . At Trace, we believe in transparency and accuracy in carbon accounting. That's why we’re moving towards Gross Emissions Reporting on our platform. While net emissions offer insight into how companies are acting on climate, they don't tell the full story. Gross emissions provide a clearer picture of a company's current impact—no hiding behind RECs. This shift is crucial as businesses aim to meet Net Zero goals without falling into the trap of inflated progress. It's about facing the reality of our carbon footprints and making meaningful, measurable changes. We invite you to explore this conversation further—let's discuss how gross emissions reporting can drive genuine climate action. #Emissions #Carbon #NetZero #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Transparency #Trace #GrossEmissionsReporting Joanna Auburn Catherine (Cat) Long

👿 The devil is in the detail 👿 🤔 Gross Vs Net emissions reporting 🤔 If we take a look at some of the big dogs; Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Google they are all reporting emission increases even though they have committed to Net Zero and are investing considerably into it. Microsoft's emissions are 30% higher today than in 2022! Could AI be to blame? That's another conversation. Bloomberg Green raised a great point on the debate of measuring emissions recently which is exactly in line with some changes we have recently made in the Trace platform. Carbon Accounting and how we account for this carbon is incredibly important. Currently large companies can buy RECs to compensate for emissions in energy usage. Corporations are purchasing these and using them to demonstrate reductions in their footprint. Currently this is allowed under the CDP rules. But these aren't actually reductions in that company's footprint. This calls for a separation of gross and net emissions reporting; even in scope 2. It might seem like a detail that shouldn't be of great concern but if you look at the chart below you can see the huge impact this has on reporting. For example Amazon's footpirnt would be 8.5 million tonnes higher than reported if they were not allowed to include RECs to 'reduce' their footprint. Google seems to be the only one not using unbundled RECs in its emissions reporting. At Trace we are moving to Gross emissions reporting, you will be able to see your net emissions but these will be a separate number and should not be used for reporting on the emissions of your organisation today. I can see the other side of the coin - we need to be motivated by progress and see that reflected in the numbers. Net emissions reporting does allow for that. But it is somewhat a false sense of achievement. Net emissions are a great way for a business to demonstrate where and how they are acting on climate but it is not the whole picture. I'd love to hear more thoughts on this- comment below! #emissions #carbon #netzero Google Meta for Business, Microsoft Amazon Trace
