Fighting for a world free from pancreatic and upper GI cancers.

About us

The Pancare Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, established in 2011. With more Australians dying of pancreatic, liver, biliary, oesophageal and stomach cancer than any other single cancer, Pancare was established as a way of increasing awareness, research and support for those affected by these cancers. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer it impacts on the whole family and the community in which they live. The Pancare Foundation not only focuses on expediting scientific progress but also the delivery of programs that are designed to address individual and changing patient needs, from the point of diagnosis through to recovery and bereavement. Meet MARIE CONDON (in the purple 💜) from St John of God Health Care —a true Pancare champion! Marie goes above and beyond to support patients and carers affected by pancreatic, liver, biliary, and upper GI cancers. She’s always there to guide them to Pancare’s resources and hands out our Care Kits to provide comfort and practical support. We’re so grateful for her dedication and the difference she makes in the lives of those navigating an Upper GI Cancer. Thank you, Marie! Our PanSupport nurses Tiffany Dobson and Melanie Regan had the honour of meeting Marie and the incredible staff at St John of God Health Care during Cancer Awareness Week in Perth last week, alongside Bowel Cancer Australia, Cancer Council Western Australia, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the Leukaemia Foundation. The Pancare team shared resources and information on the range of support services available to patients beyond the hospital walls Thank you for having us.     💙 #PancareChampion #CancerSupport #Community #CareInAction

We’re excited to announce that as part of our recent funding from the Australian Government, we are developing a specialised Upper GI Cancer Diet Information Hub. 👏 This online resource will provide easy access to evidence-based dietary information, recipes, and tips to improve quality of life during treatment. We know that people with an upper GI cancer often experience a poor prognosis, complex supportive care needs, severe debilitating treatments compounded by significant dietary issues, weight loss, fear of accelerated disease progression, and difficult-to-manage symptoms. The intersection of dietary risk factors include: ⭐ The location of the cancer itself. ⭐ The impacts of treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery, which put patients at a much greater risk of malnutrition. ⭐ Unintended weight and muscle loss (this disproportionately effects upper GI cancer patients before, during and after treatment). The digital Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Diet Information Hub will address a gap in the system and provide equity of access to evidence- based information on diet for people impacted by Upper GI cancer. #UpperGICancer #CancerSupport #DietAndNutrition #PatientEmpowerment #HealthEquity

Today the Pancare Foundation team had the great pleasure to meet with David Thomas the Chief Strategy and Science Officer at Omico and he shared how comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) is enabling more people with Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer access to clinical trials and personalised treatment. Omico offers CGP, at no cost, for all types of solid cancers that are advanced, incurable or poor prognosis cancers. This includes pancreatic cancer regardless of cancer stage. He shared data that targeted treatments can be six times more effective than older chemotherapies, benefiting 1 in 3 people now compared to just 1 in 20 two decades ago. David explained how precision oncology is driving these advances, as patients are matched to new, personalised treatments based on their cancer’s unique features. Participating in a clinical trial not only provides faster access to cutting edge treatments – these trials also play a critical role in advancing the fight against cancer. Pancare Foundation recently released State of the Nation in Upper GI Cancers in Australia highlighting the role that access to personalised medicine will play in improving outcomes for people with the disease. We are driven to ensure that all people with Upper GI Cancer who are eligible gain access to the program. To find out more visit https://lnkd.in/gkqPgSZi

Pancare is very pleased to announce that we have secured $5m in Federal Government Funding. These critical funds will support: • Expanding our National PanSupport Patient and Carer Service. • Developing a dietetics platform and resources to support patients with compromised dietary needs. • Delivering a National GP Education Program. • Establishing a Biliary Cancer Optimal Care Pathway and other key initiatives. This news comes off the back of the launch of our world first State of the Nation Report into Upper GI Cancers. This is truly great news for our cause. 🌟 Reflecting on a Landmark Event: Unite for Hope 🌟 Yesterday, we gathered for our #UniteForHope event in Melbourne to launch our report, ‘State of the Nation: Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancers in Australia’. A huge thank you to The Hon Ged Kearney Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health and Assistant Minister of Health and Aged Care, for officiating the launch. We also took the time to express our gratitude to the Federal Government for the $5 million in funding they’ve directed towards priority areas highlighted in the report. The Minister met Eliza at the launch event (pictured with her family, Minister Kearney, and Sue Hegarty, Head of Program Development and Advocacy), where Eliza highlighted the urgent need to address the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals with upper GI cancers. Diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer at just 36, Eliza represents the reality for many who encounter limited treatment options and significant barriers throughout their cancer experience. Despite the major challenges to overcome, there is good reason for hope: Significant opportunities are available to improve quality of life and survival through policy actions and investment in research. The report outlines a vision and a series of recommendations that can significantly improve survival and quality of life for all Australian upper GI cancer patients and their families by 2035, by: ⭐ Increasing the five-year survival to greater than 50 per cent through consistent adoption of research as the standard of care and the consistent implementation of best practice. ⭐ Improving the quality of life for patients and their carers through consistent, timely access to supportive and palliative care for all people diagnosed with an upper GI cancer. ⭐ Reducing growth in incidence through more effective primary and secondary prevention. ⭐ Maximising research impact in upper GI cancers through a national approach. This long-term ambition for upper GI cancers requires significant investment and policy reform, supported by governments at all levels in collaboration with the health care sector and community alike.  Together, we can harness this momentum to drive impactful change and enhance the lives of those affected by upper GI cancers. Let’s work together to turn hope into action! 💪💖 To view the report visit: https://lnkd.in/gj7Y7Vpn #UniteForHope #UpperGICancers #HealthCareInnovation #PatientCare #SurvivalRates #HealthPolicy #TogetherForChange #AustraliaHealth #CancerResearch #HopeInAction
