Australia's largest container and general cargo port
About us
Port of Melbourne is Australia’s largest capital city container and general cargo port, handling more than one-third of the nation’s container trade. We operate as a landlord port and are responsible for planning, operating and maintaining port land and shipping channels. We ensure the port has the capacity and capability needed to handle cargo, and that facilities and infrastructure are developed and maintained as needed. Located in the heart of Melbourne, among growing communities, vital industrial precincts and transport corridors, we are the cornerstone of Victoria’s port freight transport network, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Melbourne has continued to develop and evolve closely around the port, supporting the prosperity of thousands of businesses and the daily lives of many people across south-eastern Australia. The port was previously operated by Port of Melbourne Corporation, a Victorian Government entity. In 2016, Port of Melbourne Operations Pty Ltd was awarded a 50-year lease of the Port of Melbourne by the Victorian Government. The Port of Melbourne Group is owned by a consortium of shareholders with local and global expertise in delivering world-class port and infrastructure facilities and services.

Port of Melbourne is proud to welcome the largest ever vessel to call at the Port’s Swanson Dock. The Seaspan Breeze arrived at Patrick Terminals this morning, setting a new benchmark at 337 metres in length and 48.2 metres in beam. The milestone comes just days after CMA CGM Volga arrived at Swanson Dock East. With an impressive capacity of 10,622 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), the CMA CGM Volga broke the record as the largest container vessel by TEU capacity to visit Swanson Dock. Port of Melbourne is proud to continually invest in the Port’s capacity to handle larger vessels, including at Swanson Dock, and we look forward to continuing to work with our tenants and broader stakeholders to build Victoria’s supply chain resilience. We thank and congratulate Patrick Terminals, Ports Victoria, Port Phillip Sea Pilots Pty Ltd, Svitzer Australia, SeaportOPX, Stantec, and Highwater Marine for the successful coordination of this historic achievement. https://lnkd.in/gEztfbiW

#NationalSafeWorkMonth: Fire and explosion can result in catastrophic consequences for people and property, including serious injury or loss of life. At Port of Melbourne, extra care is taken at Bulk Liquid Berths, where flammable chemicals and fuels are present. In addition to the protocols in the graphic below, we also place restrictions on non-intrinsically safe equipment and require all workers to complete a site-specific induction for Bulk Liquid Berths. #nationalsafeworkmonth #SafetyIsOurBusiness #whs #workhealthandsafety #safeatwork

Last week, Port of Melbourne hosted 60 postgraduates from RMIT's Shipping Business Management course on a boat tour around the Port. It's always a pleasure to offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Port, especially to an enthusiastic group such as these students. Their keen interest in the shipping, freight, logistics, and supply chain sectors is a promising reflection of our future workforce.
Last week, sixty postgraduates of the #Shipping #Business #Management course in the School of #Accounting, Information Systems and Supply Chains, had an incredible opportunity to study on a boat, taking a tour around Port of Melbourne - Australia's biggest capital city container and general cargo port, handling more than one-third of the nation's container #trade. The onsite lecture on board the ship was a pivotal moment for students, as it illuminated the vital role of port operations in serving the region's trade and supply chains. This understanding, coupled with insights into the port's #sustainable development and strategy, significantly broadened students’ perspective on how these factors can impact the city and community's growth, enhancing their skills in understanding the impact of trade on business and community. Thanks to Caralene Moloney and the Corporate Relations Team at Port of Melbourne for this tremendous opportunity and kind hospitality to fulfill our industrial engagement experience within this course and our postgraduate program. Port of Melbourne is pleased to be an active contributor to the Industry Stakeholder Reference Group of the Victorian Freight Plan refresh. As Melbourne is projected to become Australia’s largest city by the mid-2030s, prioritising new infrastructure and capacity upgrades is essential. To strengthen Victoria’s freight system, Port of Melbourne supports establishing the right frameworks to integrate freight into key state policies, such as Plan Victoria. Port of Melbourne also hopes that sustainability and climate resilience remain a focus as the freight sector looks ahead. We applaud the Victorian Government's ongoing engagement with industry, and we look forward to further collaboration in shaping a prosperous future for Victoria's freight sector.

Fighting hunger onboard our community partner Foodbank Victoria's mobile supermarket bus! Last week, volunteers from Port of Melbourne packed 1,809 kilos of food - the equivalent of 3,618 meals. Since 2018, we have provided more than 2 million meals to Victorians in need through Foodbank Victoria. This time around, a total of 135 families came through the bus - and we can't wait to be back to support more families! #foodbank #communitypartnership

At our recently completed Swanson Dock East 150T Bollards Stage 2 Project, diving was undertaken to complete works beneath the berth. Given the port environment, many of our projects involve diving and works afloat. This was identified as the #1 critical risk in our yearly safety review, and Port of Melbourne has set a number of Critical Risk Protocols to ensure a safe work environment. This #NationalSafeWorkMonth, we're pulling back the curtain on diving and works afloat to show you some of the many protocols that exist for the safety of our staff and contractors. #SafetyIsOurBusiness #whs #workhealthandsafety #safeatwork

This National Safe Work Month, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and healthy workplace. Safety risks are present in any workplace. With several ongoing projects across 505 hectares of port land, it is our responsibility to ensure that safety risks are managed. Here are the top risks identified within the Port for which we have established Critical Safety Risk Protocols. Each week this month, we'll be sharing the ways in which these risks can be minimised. Stay tuned for more - after all, safety is everyone's business. #nationalsafeworkmonth #SafetyIsOurBusiness #whs #workhealthandsafety #safeatwork
