During last week's in-person Technical Advisory Group (TAG) workshops, we announced an important restructuring of our TAGs. When PSO first started, we were eager to set up our TAGs quickly to gather input from industry experts—we wanted to hear from you. Along the way, we've consulted with you and heard your feedback, which is why we're making these changes. The TAG meetings will now be reduced from five per year to three, and the groups will be restructured into five key areas: UEE - ELV and Specialist, UEE - General Electrical Contracting, UEE - HVAC-R, UET/UEP, and UEG. We’ve also developed a framework to evaluate technical questions, which involves pre-engagement, consultation with our founding members, and finally, discussion within the TAGs. This new structure, based on your feedback, will help streamline our processes and ensure that we continue to deliver valuable insights and support. Today, PSOs Lisa Harmer attended the NSW launch of National Skills Week. It was great to be in a room full of industry leaders and peers committed to solving the skills and workforce challenges facing Australia. The Hon. Steve Whan MP, NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE, and Tertiary Education, led the discussion with valuable insights. Minister Whan discussed the launch of the NSW VET Review, which presents a series of recommendations to ensure TAFE functions effectively, including the TAFE charter, a revised operating model, and the recognition of non-government sectors in providing training. He emphasised the importance of linking schools with VET, focusing on clear pathways from high school to vocational education. There was a fantastic panel featuring The Hon. Steve Whan, alongside Dr. Michele Bruniges AM, Chair of the NSW VET Review, Jason Ardler PSM, Founding Director, Thirriwirri and VET Review Panel Member, and David Harding, Executive Director of Business NSW. The panel centred around the VET Review outcomes and the critical role industry plays in shaping these outcomes and solutions. We also heard from Caitlyn Knox, NSW VET Ambassador and Apprentice and Komatsu, Natalie Turmine, CEO of Service and Creative Skills Australia (SaCSA), Josh Kerfoot, General Manager, Kerfoot Pty Ltd and Brian Wexham, CEO, SkillsOne Television and chair of National Skills Week. Earlier this week, Peter Adams (Senior Manager, Industry Engagement) met with the new Executive Officer of Apprentice Employment Network SA, Matt Lowe. AENSA is a network of not for profit Group Training Organisations in South Australia, and their members employ nearly 3000 apprentices and trainees throughout metro and regional South Australia. This was a fantastic opportunity to chat about the integral role of GTOs in meeting workforce demands and the work AENSA's members are undertaking regarding diversity and inclusion, mentoring and apprentice supports. We look forward to working closely with the Matt, AENSA and the National Apprentice Employment Network (NAEN) to increase the volume of quality candidates for apprenticeship opportunities through such initiatives as PSOs Creating an Energy Sector Gateway project. PSO was honoured to have our work acknowledged by Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia, during the National Skills Week launch. Professor Glover highlighted a pressing issue: women account for just 2.3% of energy trade roles, underscoring the urgent need to broaden access to these trades and tap into the full potential of our labour market. At PSO we are fully committed to tackling these challenges head-on. Diversity and belonging in the workplace form a core pillar of our operational plan. We believe that addressing gender imbalance and engaging underrepresented groups is not just a matter of equality but also a strategic necessity. As Professor Glover noted, occupations that achieve gender balance are far less likely to face workforce shortages. This insight is particularly critical as we strive to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the energy sector as we race towards Net Zero. Our recent 2024 Workforce Planning Report, The New Power Generation: Challenges and Opportunities within Australia’s Energy Sector, explores these challenges in depth. Following the JSA Clean Energy Report published in 2023, which found a need for an additional 32,000 electricians by 2030, PSO has refined this data to focus on the training packages we oversee, directly linked to the energy sector. Today PSO attended the National Press Club of Australia to celebrate the launch of National Skills Week. We had the privilege of hearing from Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia, as he addressed the topic "Skills Success in Australia: Aligning Need with Know-How." Our team members Lisa Harmer, General Manager of External Relations and Communications, and Ben King, Senior Manager, Research & Workforce Planning, were delighted to connect with key industry figures, including PSO board member Fiona Scott, Professor Barney Glover, Peter Dawkins, Former JSA Acting Commissioner, Cliff Bingham, Assistant Secretary, Labour Market Research and Analysis at Jobs and Skills Australia, and Emma King OAM, CEO of HumanAbility Ltd.
