📣 Just published 📣 A new paper from Bakkar Henriette from her time on a Manaaki scholarship from MFAT. Henriette thought she had found volcanic tremor at Taupō, but after close inspection found that it was actually caused by sustained wind creating currents in the lake! 🌬 This is important work because volcanic tremor is often seen as a precursor to eruptions, and we don't want to be fooled into thinking one of those is coming at Taupō! “The perpetual dichotomy in water infrastructure design … take on new (and often frightful) dimensions …” How big and strong should we make a new facility, be it a bridge, pier, or dam?  What size storm should they be able to withstand?  By who’s standards?  And are those standards state-of-the-art with respect to future extreme events and their cumulative provocations? Clearly, we have the technical skills to make anything virtually indestructible, but the practicality of cost has always represented the defining boundary condition. There are of course examples of arguable indestructibility even in our contemporary age; the WWII flak towers in Berlin come to mind as do the old U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire or Lorient in Brittany.  But apart from such rare examples, it’s safe to say, we don’t really build for PERMANENCY … at least not anymore ...    As an intensifying climate becomes an increasing reality, today’s structural engineers, hydrologists, climatologists, fluvial geomorphologists, and riparian biologists to name but a few … now face a new challenge.  Trying to work with antiquated financial and societal commitments all based on OLD hydrology … Ergo … will the competitive budgets of today COMPROMISE necessary SAFETY margins … and how will the water infrastructure design fraternity (fancy name for us consultants) respond to rapidly changing hydroclimatic conditions that lawmakers haven’t even yet clarified …      Who is liable for losses when a NEW facility, built in compliance with all CURRENT legal standards, FAILS horrendously …

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) uses fiber optic cables connected to an instrument that sends pulses of light through the cable.
