Women and girls globally dedicate over 2.5 times more hours per day to unpaid care work compared to men. This staggering statistic highlights the need for systemic changes to recognize and value this essential labour. The current focus on transforming care systems aligns perfectly with the Beijing+30 initiative, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark agenda for advancing gender equality and women's rights. By prioritising care, we can not only empower those who provide it but also create opportunities that foster economic growth and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Investing in care has the potential to generate 300 million jobs globally by 2035. With two-thirds of care workers being women, it’s crucial that we elevate their contributions, ensuring they receive fair compensation and recognition. This is not just a women's issue; it's a societal imperative that affects everyone. Furthermore, the transformation of care systems can lead to significant benefits for our planet. By integrating care into sustainability strategies, we can drive resilience and protect our natural environment while addressing the challenges of poverty and inequality. This Tuesday, we marked the International Day of Care and Support, a global reminder of the urgent need to prioritize sustainable, equitable care systems for all. This day served as a call for concrete actions to better support caregivers, address gender imbalances, and enhance care infrastructure worldwide. As we reflect on this week’s celebration, let’s continue advocating for transformative policies that ensure quality care and support for every community and generation. 🔗 For more insights on the importance of care work and the path forward, check out UN Women’s article and explore how we can make a difference: https://lnkd.in/eb4SHDkf #InternationalDayOfCare #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #Beijing30 #GenderEquality

Today, over 55% of the world’s population lives in cities, contributing to over 70% of global carbon emissions. This World Cities Day, the spotlight is on “Youth Leading Climate and Local Action for Cities.” With the impacts of climate change intensifying, youth-led initiatives are shaping a sustainable future for our cities, which are facing record temperatures, pollution, and extreme weather events. Young leaders worldwide are at the forefront, advocating for green urban planning, sustainable transport, and inclusive policies that prioritize climate resilience. The commitment to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hinges on city-level action and innovation, and today’s youth are crucial to bringing about this transformation. We need cities that are prepared, adaptive, and inclusive. On this World Cities Day, let’s recognize and support the powerful role young people play in creating cities that are not only habitable today but sustainable for future generations. 🌱🌆 #WorldCitiesDay #YouthClimateAction #UrbanSustainability #FutureCities #ClimateChange

The Spanish city of Valencia and the region has been hit by torrential rain in recent hours. It is the worst flooding in the area in a century. There are at least 60 people dead and several others are missing. Heavy rains are also forecasted to continue, exacerbating the already challenging situation for residents and emergency responders alike. This type of storm called DANA or Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos in Spanish (Isolated Depression at High Levels), is a familiar yet increasingly intense phenomenon in the Mediterranean, where warm sea air meets cold upper-atmosphere air, creating conditions for torrential rains. Unfortunately, the frequency and severity of such events have risen in recent years, a pattern scientists attribute, in part, to climate change. Warmer sea temperatures can intensify storm systems, transforming what might have been manageable rainfall into devastating floods. Spain, like other Mediterranean countries, is witnessing firsthand the tangible impacts of climate change as such storms become more intense and destructive each year. Our thoughts are with the people of Valencia and all those affected by extreme weather worldwide. This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the urgent need to address climate resilience, implement robust adaptation strategies, and commit globally to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as the key cause of climate change. 38% of the world’s tree species are threatened with extinction. That is the result of a scientific report presented at #COP16 in Cali, Colombia. The study reveals that over one-third of the world's tree species are threatened by agriculture, logging, pests, and disease, which place essential species like magnolias, oaks, and ebonies at high risk. Trees play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, cleaning the air, absorbing carbon, and providing habitats. Without trees, entire ecosystems could collapse, impacting countless species that depend on them. Conservation researcher Steven Bachman emphasised that "if we lose the trees, we are losing many other species with them,” as trees are foundational to biodiversity. The biodiversity summit, running until 1 November, is a critical milestone in evaluating the 30x30 target, a global pledge to protect 30% of lands, seas, and oceans by 2030. Among COP16 Colombia’s main discussions are strategies for safeguarding biodiversity, increasing conservation funding, and implementing robust national protection plans. Key goals include securing more resilient ecosystems and advancing global efforts to counteract the severe biodiversity losses that threaten environmental and human stability. The United Nations’s latest NDC Synthesis Report calls for immediate, bolder action as current national climate plans remain drastically insufficient. If fully implemented, current plans would only reduce emissions by 2.6% by 2030 from 2019 levels, far below the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) target of a 43% cut by 2030 to keep global heating within 1.5°C. This temperature threshold is essential to avoid severe climate impacts that threaten economies and billions of lives worldwide. Key Insights: 🔹 Emissions Challenge: IPCC underscores that a 60% cut by 2035 from 2019 levels is critical. With only incremental progress made so far, urgent enhancement of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is essential for meaningful climate action. 🔹 New Standards for NDCs: Each plan must be ambitious, specific (sector- and gas-targeted), and credible, with regulations and funding in place to guarantee implementation. 🔹 Broader Benefits: Stronger NDCs will not only address climate risks but can boost jobs, secure cleaner energy, lower costs, and improve health globally. Looking to COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku as a pivotal moment, nations are urged to solidify the UAE Consensus commitments from COP28: tripling renewables, transitioning away from fossil fuels, and ensuring climate finance that supports developing countries. The report emphasizes that the upcoming NDCs are crucial policy documents and should set a clear path toward low-carbon economies and adaptation investments worldwide. New report warns of catastrophic 3.1°C global temperature rise without urgent emissions cuts The latest Emissions Gap Report from UN Environment Programme sends a stark message: without immediate, substantial cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, global temperatures could increase by up to 3.1°C this century. This potential rise is well above the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement and would lead to severe, irreversible climate impacts, disproportionately harming the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that this emissions gap isn’t an abstract notion: there’s a direct link between rising emissions and the surge in extreme weather events. “We are teetering on a planetary tightrope,” he warned, urging world leaders to bridge this gap or face a climate disaster. The report indicates that the world needs to cut global emissions by 45% by 2030 to stay on track. Yet, current pledges, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), are only delivering about 13% of the reductions needed. With COP29 Azerbaijan fast approaching, global action must accelerate significantly to prevent the worst outcomes of climate change. As we move closer to critical tipping points, one thing is clear: the time to act is now, with immediate, collaborative global efforts to reduce emissions and invest in climate resilience. Today we celebrate the 79th anniversary of the United Nations’s creation, reflecting on its remarkable journey of promoting peace, human rights, and sustainable development across the globe. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, particularly the urgent threat of climate change, the UN continues to lead global efforts in tackling these crises through cooperative, multilateral action. The Paris Agreement, adopted under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC, ONU Cambio Climático), stands as a beacon of hope. It unites nearly 200 countries in their commitment to limit global warming to 1.5º C while striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Through initiatives like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 on Climate Action, the UN underscores the importance of collective responsibility in mitigating climate risks, supporting vulnerable communities, and protecting our ecosystems for future generations. As we celebrate United Nations Day and reflect on the global climate efforts led by the UN, we also look forward to the upcoming COP29 Azerbaijan, set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan in November. This critical summit will bring together world leaders, experts, and advocates to discuss and advance the goals of the Paris Agreement. At 10 Billion Solutions, we are excited to announce that we will be attending COP29 to engage in these pivotal discussions and contribute to shaping meaningful climate action. Stay tuned for updates on our involvement as we work together toward a sustainable future! Did you know? False information on climate change has increased by over 300% in recent years, fueled by the rapid spread of disinformation across social media platforms and enhanced by AI tools. But fake news isn’t the only issue: disinformation is spreading unchecked as people rely on a single source or fail to fact-check. In today’s digital age, the proliferation of fake news is not just a political or social issue; it’s a critical threat to our environment. Disinformation campaigns, particularly around climate change, are undermining global efforts to combat the crisis, as highlighted by 10 Billion Solutions in the article "Climate disinformation mounts to absurd, dangerous levels" (link below). With the rise of AI-generated content, discerning fact from fiction has never been more challenging. It’s crucial that we take an active role in verifying sources and fostering media literacy. Organizations, governments, and individuals must collaborate to counter these narratives and ensure that science-backed, responsible messaging reaches the public. In this complex landscape, how can we make sure that truth prevails? https://lnkd.in/d5zMRtbc #FakeNews #ClimateCrisis #AI #Sustainability #ClimateCommunications
