Australia’s leading suicide postvention program dedicated to assisting communities bereaved or impacted by suicide
About us
The StandBy program is focused on supporting anyone who has been bereaved or impacted by suicide at any stage in their life, including: Individuals Families Friends Witnesses First Responders Service Providers StandBy is accessible seven days a week, providing free face-to face and/or telephone support at a time and place that is best for each individual. The program offers coordinated evidence-based support and resources (including connections to local services and groups) that is individualised for each person’s unique circumstance. This support is continued for up to two years to ensure those that engage with StandBy are not alone and receive ongoing support. StandBy is guided by local advisory groups – which includes community stakeholders as well as those with Lived Experience. StandBy National is informed by our National Lived Experience Advisory Group. StandBy builds community preparedness and resilience through extensive training to community and professional groups to ensure effectiveness and that duplicated effort is avoided. The program is also ideally placed to offer a settings-based approach, providing group support after a suicide for schools, workplaces and community groups. StandBy – An initiative jointly funded by the Australian, New South Wales, Victorian, Queensland and Northern Territory Governments. StandBy is a program of Youturn Limited.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne are exploring the suicide bereavement experiences and needs among Muslims and people with an Islamic cultural background living in Australia. The outcomes will inform subsequent work aimed at modifying existing interventions to better aid Muslims and individuals with an Islamic cultural background to process grief and to support their mental health. StandBy is committed to the continual learning around how we can best support diverse groups of people who are impacted by suicide. If you are interested in learning more about the study to be involved, please email ederakhshan@student.unimelb.edu.au #StandBySupportAfterSuicide #SuicidePostvention

Congratulations Bess Jackson, Myfanwy Maple and Sarah Wayland on their recent research publication. We're very excited to see this important research published and we can't wait to see what is next in your research measuring outcomes in suicide postvention.
I am so pleased to share with you the latest publication of our work, exploring the sensitive use of outcome measures in suicide postvention. This paper reports on focus groups held in late 2023. Although the focus groups spanned only a few hours, they were instrumental in guiding my thinking for the entire PhD project. For me, it was important to get this paper published because not only were the participants passionate and insightful, but they were also so eloquent (evidential in their quotes included in the paper). They spoke in metaphors of the ocean which flow throughout the paper. https://lnkd.in/g8DeP_v8 The ocean analogy seemed fitting for this paper as it's one of my three 'salty self-care' strategies; the other two (a good sweat and a good cry) were also relied upon at various stages of the process! As always, I could not have done it without the support and expertise of my superstar supervisory team, Myfanwy Maple, Sarah Wayland and Shelley Ball.
