Championing the ventures of tomorrow, we have been advocating for Western Australia's exciting startup sector since 2015

About us

Over the past decade, the early stage innovation and technology (startup) sector in WA has evolved significantly, but can do so much more with additional resources and support. StartupWA advocates for more support and engagement from government, corporates, universities, investors and others to help develop the next generation of scalable ventures. Technology has ALWAYS created more jobs than it has displaced, and this trend will continue. WA needs to diversify its economy, in order to create the companies and jobs of tomorrow, and allow us to maintain and improve our excellent lifestyle here in the West.

  • It was good to see the Cook Labor Party's election promise of $40M for another 4 years of the New Industries Fund, and other opportunities for WA Startups in the 'Made in WA' plan (released 23.2.25). With the state election this weekend, it's been pretty much radio silence elsewhere on any promises for our local innovators and startups. Chair Charlie Gunningham discusses why governments MUST support this sector, if we are going to realise its potential, see great companies emerge, inspire the next generation and help diversify our economy... • StartupWA response to the WA Labor Party’s ‘Made in WA’ Plan, released 23.2.2025... ⭐ The 32-page ‘Made in WA’ Plan is primarily focused on large-scale manufacturing and infrastructure ⭐ The New Industries Fund (which contains programs aimed at supporting WA’s startup sector) is renewed with $40M over 4 years, as an election commitment (page 27 of the plan) ⭐ Startups in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, space technology, biofuels, defence, tourism, and creative industries may also find opportunities. The ‘Made in WA’ plan includes several initiatives that could benefit startups, mainly in the renewal of the New Industries Fund, and other opportunities in advanced manufacturing, clean energy and related technologies. ⭐ New Industries and Innovation Fund ($40 million over 4 years) StartupWA had called for the renewal of the ‘New Industries Fund’ with $100M. Its funding is set to run out in June 2025. The plan’s promised $40M falls well below this, however it does represent a lift on the current level (which would equate to $35M over 4 years). StartupWA Chair Charlie Gunningham welcomed the announcement: “It is good to see the Cook Government promising the renewal and further extension of the ever-popular New Industries Fund and its highly over-subscribed programs. “It is now eight years old, and this announcement promises another 4 years of life. “This will give heart, and all important support, to the exciting startup sector in WA, which has already yielded unicorn companies (valued over $1 billion) and others worth well over $100M, creating new jobs and helping to diversify the local economy. “Current annual levels of support should now rise from $8.5M to $10M a year, well above the original levels of $4.2M/year when the NIF first came into being eight years ago. “The sector is far larger now than it was in 2017. According to independently collected Dealroom data, it is made up of more than 1,000 companies collectively valued at $12 billion - up from $820M in 2017, an almost 15-fold increase - employing almost 10,000 people. “More startups means more help is required. And more great companies can be encouraged, along with innovative entrepreneurship all over our State, which must include female-founded and run companies, First Nations businesses and startups in the regions. “We have been calling for a $100M fund over four years ($25M/year), so although this may not the level we asked for, we are happy to hear that the NIF will be extended for another term of government, as promised by the Cook Government, should it win power again on 8 March. “The announced funding of $40M is a 15% increase on current levels, and 140% above its original budget of $16.7M over four years.” “Startups should also be encouraged to see extra funding in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, space technology, biofuels, defence, tourism, and creative industries, so there will be opportunities in these industries too.” Go #WA #startups!

Good to see the WA Government has raised the minimum exemption for procurement from $50K to $5M, for local manufacturers. This came into effect yesterday, and is something the local innovation community has been calling for, for years. Procurement is also a key pillar of the Innovation Strategy (2022) and the recent Science and Tech Plan. We need to back our local innovators, and give them a fighting chance in local procurement. "Give me an order, not a grant!" Similar rules exist in other states already, although the $5M is the largest anywhere. Local manufacturers - here's your chance. That's the good news. Of course, the proof will be in the pudding. Will this have a major impact on local manufacturers? StartupWA Chair Charlie Gunningham is quoted in today's InnovationAus.com article ("WA manufacturers get $5m procurement fast lane", from Brandon How) saying... "without any incentives to use local manufacturers, apart from permission to do so, will there be much change? If the total state government budget is $36 billion plus, and they are going to spend that anyway, why not stipulate that a percentage should be spent on local startups?" Time will tell... We’re urging the WA startup sector to join us in calling on the Cook Labor Government to extend the New Industries Fund (NIF) beyond 2025, with a $100M budget over the next 4 years. Without this vital support, Western Australia’s innovation ecosystem will face significant challenges. “If the NIF is not extended, WA risks losing its momentum as a hub for innovation". “We are already seeing pressure on businesses and households from the rising cost of living. Removing this funding would make it even harder for entrepreneurs to succeed, jeopardising not only jobs but the economic diversification that our state urgently needs, said Charlie Gunningham, Chair of StartupWA.” https://lnkd.in/g92gF9Sw

  • . StartupWA Chair Charlie Gunningham addressed the MAIN West Tech Fest conference today, introducing the new power-packed board, and called on the State Government to renew the New Industries Fund with $100M, as well as the other 'Top 10 Priorities' list (www.startupwa.org/topten). There have been some impressive new announcements from the State Government this week, including $736K for the latest rounds (of 12) Innovation Booster and Commercialisation Bridge Grant recipients (230+ applied), $33.6M to the (5) Chevron Gorgon's Lower Carbon Grants recipients and 7 venture capital recipients of $45M from the WA Venture Capital Initiative. But what of the $25.8M New Industries Fund? Its funding expires June 2025...
