SRA’s new CEO Mick Bartlett recently visited many of the sugarcane regions for face-to-face catch-ups with growers, millers, industry representatives and SRA staff. These on-the-ground meetings have been very productive to date. The tour visits have included on-site demonstrations, farm visits and mill tours, among other focused activities in Mackay, Proserpine, Burdekin, Ingham, Herbert, Innisfail, South Johnstone, Tully, Far North Queensland, Bundaberg, Rocky Point and Broadwater. Over the coming weeks, Mick is planning further visits to the southern cane growing areas, including Harwood Mill. #sugarresearchaustralia CANEGROWERS Australia Canegrowers Mackay Mackay Sugar MSF Sugar Wilmar Sugar Australia Limited Mackay Area Productivity Services (MAPS) Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI)

A shout-out today to all rural women who are contributing to the strength and success of the Australian sugarcane industry through their work on family farms in Queensland and northern New South Wales. With duties ranging from farm accounts, collecting supplies from town to cane haulout and planting, and everything in between, your efforts are celebrated today on the United Nations’ International Day for Rural Women. In particular, SRA acknowledges our hard-working female staff members in regional Queensland who not only work to progress research, development and adoption in the industry but help run farms themselves. #RuralWomen #RuralWomensDay United Nations Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland) Queensland Farmers' Federation CANEGROWERS Australia

Join us for this upcoming SRA Webinar. Many across the Australian sugarcane industry are very familiar with the end-product of SRA’s efforts to breed new commercial varieties and release them to industry. However, less is known about how we actually produce new genotypes for testing in the SRA selection programs. Dr Felicity Atkin will offer a unique insight into the private life of sugarcane, and what actually happens behind the cross-pollination curtains at the Meringa station. Date: Friday 25/10/24 Time: 2pm (AEST) Register here: https://lnkd.in/gvZbXx9d #sugarresearchaustralia #sugarindustry Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) The University of Queensland University of Southern Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland) CANEGROWERS Australia Mackay Area Productivity Services (MAPS) Canegrowers Mackay Australian Research Council Nathalie Piperidis

Yesterday’s grower event was an informative day for those who attended the advanced pre-emergent herbicide workshop at SRA’s Ingham Station. Herbert growers, Herbert Cane Productivity Services LTD (HCPSL) representatives and local SRA staff all came along for the interactive day. Presented by SRA Weed Scientist Emilie Fillols, the customised presentation focused on understanding and identifying weeds, how to pick the best pre-emergent herbicide for your paddock, and overall pre-emergence herbicide management to take control of weeds – before they take control of your farm. A great day was had by all with positive feedback from attendees.
