Wound packing saves lives, but not with these common household items! While they might be the closest thing to grab in an emergency, these 5 things can worsen patient outcomes. ❌Tampons. Remember, bleeding control is about pressure, not absorption! ❌Cotton balls. Household cotton fragment easily when soaked with blood, leaving fibres in the wound and absorb blood without creating sufficient pressure. ❌Paper Towels. Paper products not only lack the structural integrity needed to maintain pressure, but they also disintegrate when saturate, making removal difficult. ❌Band-Aids. Despite what your mum might have told you as a kid, Band-Aids do not fix everything and definitely won’t help major bleeding. ❌Dirty Towels. Kitchen, bathroom, beach, garage, dog, car or any other towel is generally a no go for wound packing as you don't want to risk putting outside dirt and germs into the body. With that being said, if it's your only option we'd take the anti-biotics over bleeding to death... So, what should you pack a wound with? The MARCH protocol flips traditional trauma assessment on its head. While you might have learned ABC (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), tactical medicine teaches us that massive haemorrhage is actually the #1 preventable cause of death in trauma. M - Massive Haemorrhage (stop the bleeding first) A - Airway (secure breathing pathway) R - Respirations (check and continuously monitor breathing) C - Circulation (treat other injuries & check vitals) H - Head injury & Hypothermia (prevent secondary injury) Swipe through to learn this approach from the TCCC and let us know your thoughts in the comments 👇

Did you know - The concept of traction splinting dates back to 1875 when Hugh Owen Thomas developed the first splint of its kind - known as the Thomas Splint. This device revolutionised the treatment of femoral fractures, and dramatically reduced mortality rates during WWI. Yet despite over a century of medical advancement, the basic design remained largely unchanged, with practitioners facing the same fundamental challenges: too bulky, too complex, and limited versatility. That's where @samuel-slishman comes in... We just dropped THE SLISHMAN STORY in the TacMed Learning centre, and whether you already know (and love) this device or have never heard of it, we think this article is a must read 👉📖 And if you've been waiting for us to restock the top-selling Slishman Traction Splint Gen2, we've got great news!! Our shipment just landed and it's available now on the website 👊 🔗 Article Here: https://lnkd.in/gJmfAbMx 🔎 Device Here: https://lnkd.in/gEHGTqsV #splinting #emergencypreparedness #traumacare #firstresponder #paramedic

Modern tourniquets are proven lifesavers - so why do dangerous myths about them keep circulating? After seeing a bunch of concerning comments on the recent workplace safety training video we shared, we wanted to set the record straight. Link is here to read our latest blog in The Learning Centre: https://lnkd.in/g-h_bp42 Don't forget to send it to all your mates who still believe "tourniquet" is a dirty word 😒. #tourniquet #lifesaver #firstresponse #firstresponder #emergencypreparedness #trauma
