Carley Walker has worn many hats in her life, from working on a sheep and cattle station to being a sculptor. But her love for teaching led her to take on her biggest adventure yet. In January 2024, she moved with her husband and two children, aged 10 and 14, from Queensland to Tasmania to join Teach For Australia’s Leadership Development Program. Having previously worked as a learning support officer and teacher aide, Carley always felt drawn to education. “I like teaching kids and finding fun ways to do it, so they don’t even realise they’re learning,” she explains. The Leadership Development Program offered the pathway to change careers, allowing her to earn a teaching qualification while still providing for her family. Carley now teaches English and Humanities to Year 7 and 8 students in outer regional Tasmania. “Our school is small, with about 250 students, but that’s what makes it special,” she says. “I know every student by name, and I can make sure they feel welcome and safe." One student in particular has inspired her. Despite facing many challenges at home, he still comes to school with a sense of adventure and excitement. “Seeing him make progress in his studies, even if it's small steps, is incredibly rewarding,” Carley says. Teach For Australia’s Leadership Development Program recruits, trains and supports passionate individuals who make a difference in classrooms across the country. Help us support more teachers like Carley and create brighter futures for students everywhere. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/gacPVimZ

🌱From little things, big things grow! Congratulations to our #radicle Leadership Development Program Alumni, Gregg Barker (2020), Jake Treloar (2020) and Kingsley Gittins (2021), for making finalists in the Northern Territory’s Radicle Science Awards 2024 in the Secondary School STEM Educator of the year category. Run by Charles Darwin University's CDU Radicle Centre, the Radicle Science Awards recognise champions who have practiced and promoted Science and Technology across the NT’s schools and communities. 🌱 ‘Radicle’ is the scientific name given to the first root that appears when a seed germinates, representing unleashing the potential of the NT’s youth and increasing the reach of Science and Technology to every child and family in the Territory. In the lead-up to #WorldTeacherDay on 25 October, we are tipping our hat to Gregg, Jake and Kinglsey, who have gone the extra mile to bring #STEM into the classroom and beyond. Bayka Magendans had a rich and varied career before becoming a teacher in regional Victoria. After moving to China to learn Kungfu, he immersed himself in the culture and language, teaching English to VIPs as well as hosting a Chinese-language TV show. In 2005, he started teaching English as a second language and found a natural affinity for helping others learn. But a change in the Chinese education legislation forced Bayka to reconsider his trajectory. That's when he found the opportunity to use his unique experiences to make a difference through Teach For Australia’s Learning Development Program. “I find teaching rewarding when students see that learning can be interesting and fun,” Bayka says. Bayka’s dedication is evident in how he connects with his students at a school in regional Victoria. Gus, a Year 7 student, once dreaded Chinese lessons. After one term, he’s now top of the class. The Leadership Development Program tackles the teacher shortage by bringing subject specialists like Bayka into classrooms, ensuring students don’t miss out on a quality education. Find out how you can support teachers like Bayka at https://lnkd.in/gacPVimZ
