Australia’s Land Ecosystem Observatory
About us
TERN, an NCRIS-enabled project, provides researchers with open access to Australia’s land-based ecosystem monitoring infrastructure, data and research tools that facilitate research on the understanding and long-term sustainable management of Australia’s ecosystems. TERN delivers: 1) Ecosystem data and the programs to collect it including plot data from surveillance and targeted monitoring programs; gas, energy, and nutrient exchanges; remote sensing data; modelled data products about soil, climate, and landscape attributes; and vegetation and soil samples for physical analysis; 2) Tools for the research community including national consistent field methods, data collection apps, and data publishing tools; and 3) Data infrastructure that supports discovery, access, and re-use of ecosystem data collected by TERN and others.

🏜 Dr Anne Griebel, a Lecturer in Environmental Biology at the University of Technology Sydney, is a leading expert in ecological drought and long-term environmental monitoring. Her research integrates plant physiology and landscape ecology to study the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. Dr Griebel specializes in analysing how droughts and heatwaves affect ecosystem water dynamics and flammability, particularly in Australian forests. Dr Griebel's interdisciplinary approach, combining data from FLUXNET, LiDAR scanners, and vegetation surveys, provides crucial insights into the long-term effects of ecological drought on biodiversity and ecosystem services. 📊 Last week we had representatives of TERN Australia attend the International Long Term Ecological Research (ILTER) Open Science Meeting (OSM) in Xishuangbanna, China. During the conference they visited some research sites belonging to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), including their canopy crane and flux observation tower and a 20ha forest dynamics plot. #OSM2024 #ecological #research #conference #fieldtrip #fluxtower

TERN Australia is an invaluable resource for Australian environmental proffessionals. Ozius leveraged the data provided by TERN to help build our Biome data products. Biome is the engine that drives our business, the products and services we create depend on high quality, robust and reliable input data sets... like those provided by TERN. Learn more about how Ozius used TERN data to create Australia's first 3D continental scale #vegetation structure data products at 20m pixel size. https://lnkd.in/gFRZzVrF Since launch we've now delivered over 6 billion hectares of data products, to NGO's, government, universities and private enterprise. Not possible without TERN Australia. “We can’t simply provide our customers with data for them to interpret, we must provide them with knowledge and intelligence that they didn’t otherwise possess, as quickly as possible and with a high level of confidence.” couldn't agree with myself more... #earthobservation #naturalcapital #biodiversity #artificialintelligence TERN Australia #sustainability #data

🏜 Dr Georgy Falster is a climate scientist with a particular focus on understanding long-term variability in Earth's water cycle. Her research integrates data from weather observations, climate models, and natural ‘proxies’ for past climate variability—including tree rings, ice cores, lake sediments, and corals. With these information sources, she develops pre-industrial climate ‘baselines’ against which to assess modern changes. Dr Falster’s interdisciplinary approach provides crucial insights into long-term drought patterns and their drivers, and offers a comprehensive perspective on drought in the context of human-caused global climate change. 🔍 Data Discovery | Soil Bacteria and Fungi Beta Diversity Maps Did you know that soil microorganisms mediate a wide range of key processes and ecosystem services on which humans depend on? This is Version 1 of the Soil Bacteria and Fungi Beta Diversity product of the Soil and Landscape Grid of Australia. The map provides a modelled estimate of the spatial distribution of Soil Microbial Beta Diversity across Australia, between approximately 1950-2022. The resulting maps also reveal the pattern of soil biota which can further be used for regional assessment of soil biodiversity and from which degradation induced by global changes can be monitored. 📊 Access the data on the TERN Data Discovery Portal: https://lnkd.in/dT3P9ZD2 #datadiscovery #EarthScienceWeek #data #research #biodiversity #soil #bacteria #fungi

Proud and excited to finally share my first proper publication 😇, on a project I completed last year for TERN Australia, about 'the importance of clear communication at all stages of an environmental management project aiming to standardise practices' - we worked with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to evaluate a process of developing and rolling out environmental monitoring standards/guidelines for NRM projects.
