The winds may have eased and the flood waters receded but the impact of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred is still being felt by communities across Queensland. It's impact on children in particular may not be that obvious, but families do not have to recover alone. The Emerging Minds Community Trauma Toolkit is one of the resources available to help support adults and and children before, during and after disasters. Read on for more info and links...
The immediate aftermath of disaster can feel overwhelming. Communities face not only the devastation of physical destruction but also the deep emotional and social challenges that come with recovery. People of lived experience of disaster events have emphasised the importance of holding spaces for community connection post-event. Enabling inclusive processes arranged at a community-level, with supports as required, can set a solid foundation for recovery and renewal. "Communities have a remarkable ability to rebuild, heal, and grow stronger when they support each other." (R. Gordan) DisasterWISE have sourced the following resources that may be helpful in the early phase of recovery for community members, groups and supporting organisations, that prioritise self-care and wellbeing. The Australia Psychological Society developed a tip sheet on Recovering from Floods: Promoting Safety, Comfort and Help after a Flood https://ow.ly/klav50Ve7v3, providing an outline of helpful skills that help in disaster recovery. The Emerging Minds Community Trauma Toolkit contains resources to help support adults and and children before, during and after disaster. Here’s a few resources from the toolkit; 🌱Looking after your wellbeing following a disaster https://ow.ly/u1Gm50Ve7vh 🌱What families can do to look after themselves following a flood (podcast) https://ow.ly/ib2g50Ve7vc 🌱16 Tips to support your child’s recovery after a flood https://ow.ly/NPtC50Ve7va If you are looking for specific information for your community, please reach out connect@disasterwise.com.au or join the learning network platform here; https://ow.ly/bGE150Ve7vf to ask questions and learn from others in the network.

With the impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred still being felt across SE Queensland, it's timely that the release of the Thriving Kids in Disasters (TKiD) Phase 2 action and investment plan is imminent. As good as Queensland is at managing disasters, we can always do better - especially when it comes to supporting the needs of children and young people. To get up to speed on the principles and recommendations from Phase 1, read the report here: https://lnkd.in/gzfNEtQD #TKiD #KidsInDisasters
In mid 2024 TQKP released the 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐓𝐊𝐢𝐃) 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭. With TC Alfred likely to have enduring impacts on many thousands of families and young Queenslanders in South East Qld (and northern NSW), it’s a reminder that while we are very fortunate to have some of the best disaster management capabilities in the world, we’ve also got an opportunity to do better. The Phase 1 report looked ‘under the hood’ at child wellbeing and resilience knowledge and practice in Queensland’s disaster arrangements. It found pockets of great practice, and critical gaps in current strategies and approaches. This resulted in a set principles and recommendations about how we gear our systems to better support the needs of kids and caregivers. Since then - with further support from the The John Villiers Trust and the TKiD Leadership Alliance - we’ve been pursuing TKiD Phase 2. This will produce an action and investment plan, to be released in late March / early April - so stay tuned! In the meantime, we encourage anyone interested to check out the Phase 1 report here: https://lnkd.in/gzfNEtQD and the library of fantastic resources here: https://lnkd.in/gn6GpUH2 If you’d like to get involved or attend an upcoming briefing, please contact TKiD Lead Jacinta Perry, jacinta.perry@aracy.org.au Thanks again to: Emerging Minds Australia UNICEF Australia Royal Far West Outback Futures Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service Queensland Police Service Queensland State Emergency Service Queensland Fire Department Queensland Reconstruction Authority Michelle Roberts Lifeline Queensland Australian Red Cross Local Government Association of Queensland The John Villiers Trust FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) David Crisafulli MP Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers
