About us
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) works with international partners and other countries to tackle global challenges, increase trade and investment opportunities, protect international rules, keep our region stable and help Australians overseas. DFAT manages Australia’s international presence—a network of over 120 embassies, high commissions, consulates-general and representative offices across five continents —and we have over 6,000 staff located in Australia and overseas. These staff are the diplomats, negotiators, consular officers and advisers developing and delivering Australia’s foreign, trade and development policy on behalf of Australia and Australians. For 24/7 consular assistance, phone +61 2 6261 3305. DFAT acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respect to all First Nations peoples, their cultures and to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Water is central to the wellbeing of societies. Australia is committed to working with governments and partners across our region to expand water access and build climate resilience. Initiatives such as ‘Water for Women’ are providing water, sanitation and hygiene to some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised communities, including women, girls and people with disabilities. On #WorldWaterDay, learn more about our support for water and climate security here: https://lnkd.in/gZughBj6 Photo: Water for Women

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This Harmony Week, we reflect on the need to stand against racism and prejudice—in our communities, workplaces, and beyond. At DFAT, we are proud of our diversity. Our officers have a deep understanding of cultures around the world and their lived experiences make our global engagement stronger. Our diplomacy is most effective when it is authentically Australian, reflecting the full spectrum of who we are as a nation. Inclusion isn’t just important - it’s essential to finding common ground and delivering in our national interests. Does your business operate in Argentina, Pakistan, or Türkiye? If so, we want to hear from you. To bolster Australian trade, jobs and prosperity, as well as protect our right to regulate, we need up-to-date investment treaties with our partners around the world. DFAT is reforming key Bilateral Investment Treaties to modernise our agreements with Argentina, Pakistan and Türkiye. Investment treaties form part of Australia's open rules-based economic architecture that helps deepen our economic engagement with partners around the world and which supports Australian trade, jobs, and prosperity. We’re seeking input from those with business experience in these countries. If you’d like to help shape DFAT’s position in these negotiations, learn more and get involved here: https://lnkd.in/eb7GnCgs. Submissions close 4 April 2025.
