About us
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) works with international partners and other countries to tackle global challenges, increase trade and investment opportunities, protect international rules, keep our region stable and help Australians overseas. DFAT manages Australia’s international presence—a network of over 120 embassies, high commissions, consulates-general and representative offices across five continents —and we have over 6,000 staff located in Australia and overseas. These staff are the diplomats, negotiators, consular officers and advisers developing and delivering Australia’s foreign, trade and development policy on behalf of Australia and Australians. For 24/7 consular assistance, phone +61 2 6261 3305. DFAT acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respect to all First Nations peoples, their cultures and to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Cyber sanctions work to deter cybercrime and help to protect Australians from cybercriminals operating across jurisdictions. Australia has joined the UK and US in imposing cyber sanctions on cybercriminals Maksim Viktorovich Yakubets, Igor Olegovich Turashev and Aleksandr Viktorovich Ryzhenkov for their senior roles in the Evil Corp cybercrime group. Evil Corp is one of the most prolific and longest running cybercrime groups in the world, and has disrupted key sectors across the US, UK and Europe for financial gain. The sanction prevents Yakubets, Turashev and Ryzhenkov from entering Australia and prohibits Australians from dealing with their assets. Imposing a cyber sanction shows Australia’s unwavering commitment to a rules-based cyberspace, grounded in international law and norms of responsible state behaviour. The Government remains committed to deterring and responding to malicious cyber activity as set out in the 2023 2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy. Reconciliation Australia has endorsed DFAT’s new Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2024-2027. The RAP is our blueprint for embedding reconciliation and cultural learning into all we do. DFAT is uniquely placed to elevate First Nations voices, achievements and cultures through our international engagement, the global network of over 120 posts we lead and manage on behalf of the government and all Australians, and our delivery of passports and consular services. Our RAP outlines DFAT’s approach to build and maintain respectful relationships and create opportunities in partnership with First Nations peoples. This includes through engaging First Nations people and organisations in international trade, foreign policy and development. DFAT values the contributions First Nations people make to our work, and we encourage First Nations people to apply to work with us.
