🎙️ NEW PODCAST New innovations in farm tech and machinery offer growers incredible increases in productivity and profitability. But, many of these innovations are released without growers having hands-on experience with how they work or how they can add value to their farming systems. Earlier this year, GRDC invested in live machinery demo days, with the first event hosted by WANTFA at Cunderdin in WA, with a focus on precision agriculture and variable rate technology. In this episode, we’re joined by David Minkey from WANTFA and Frankland River grower Ben Beech to find out more about the benefits of hands-on opportunities and practical demonstrations for growers. GRDC Grain Storage Extension's Chris Warrick retells the story of a simple test by now-retired stored grain authority Phillip Burrill. Sifting through the first 40L of grain from a header post outing (after being cleaned and stored), he began looking for pests. He stopped when the headcount reached 1000 lesser grain borers. Chris: "And this was from a harvester that was thought to be clean.” Read more about having a clean approach to pest management 🧼 https://bit.ly/3YBLxOi 📷 Lucy RC Photography #GroundCoverOnline #Pests #GrainStorage

"Most WA growers, they push the barrier pretty hard." "They'll adopt technology pretty early, they'll give things a go, they'll look for solutions, they'll source research where they need to...they're pretty proactive in terms of getting their head around what they need to do to improve the bottom line in their business." We couldn't agree more, Ben! GRDC in Conversation is back with a stellar line-up of personalities from the west. First episode with Ben White drops tomorrow - don't miss it! 🌾🌾 GROWER STORY For Andy Tucker, a 5500-tonne farm storage infrastructure supports a flexible approach to his 100% broadacre cropping business, while helping to maximise returns. Farming at Maroona in south-west Victoria, his cone-based silo and shed storage system enables him to sell grain directly to the feed and export markets at a time and price that best suits him. 👉 Read more https://bit.ly/3C7DeSq

🌾 🌾 GROWER STORY Central Queensland grain grower Mark Baker harvested tonnes of mungbeans earlier this year. It was the first time he'd planted the pulse in about 6 years and it was his biggest mungbean planting by area at 2000 ha. Mark’s planting opportunity depends on: 1️⃣ Moisture - “We are moisture farmers. So, if I have a foot and 1/2 of soil moisture at the beginning of January and more rain coming, I will go for it. This season we had 300mm of in-crop rain.” 2️⃣ Timing - “I’ve learnt when not to plant. For us, mungbeans must be sown by the 3rd week of January. We’ve never had much success in February. They like long days.” 3️⃣ Nutrition - “I put starter fertiliser down with all my pulses now. They need the nitrogen and trace elements.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4hkgDlP 📷 Arthur Mostead + supplied #GroundCoverOnline #Mungbeans #Northern
