It has been phenomenal to see the Hinchinbrook and Cardwell communities pulling together, with Premier David Crisafulli MP state ministers Ann Leahy MP, Dan Purdie, Brent Mickelberg MP, Bob Katter MP, Senator Susan McDonald Nick Dametto Ramon Jayo - boots on the ground, streamlining and advocating to ensure the region gets what it needs. Overnight, the Federal Government activated additional financial support (https://lnkd.in/g-X7JtT2). The Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit today reinforced what locals have been saying for decades about fixing and flood proofing the Bruce Highway. His reaction to the fallen bridge at Mutarnee said it all. “It is clearly too low.” And a subsequent commitment to build back better.👍🏼 The level of cross-party collaboration has been both impressively swift and essential, with a temporary bridge now in place for vital supplies to Ingham (Thanks ADF) and the substation operational in Ingham —a testament to the determination of many to get things done. I’ve been checking in with impacted business owners, stakeholders, Chambers across NQ/FNQ, and frontline leaders. Some conversations have been inspiring, others heartbreaking, and a few, to be honest, quite hilarious. One moment that stood out was a message exchange with a local Brigadier after thanking her team for flying supplies into Ingham. I mentioned how comforting it is to hear the Chinooks overhead all day. Her response? "That is the nicest noise complaint I have ever received."!! A reminder that in challenging times kindness and a little humour go a long way! 𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘/ 𝗕𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 Yesterday, we received reassurance from the state government that plans were progressing swiftly to temporarily replace the Ollera Bridge, ensuring emergency personnel and supplies can reach communities to the north. Today the Federal Government has announced: "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 (𝘈𝘋𝘍) 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Minister for Emergency Management, Jenny McAllister, confirmed federal support, stating: "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥." It is heartening to see both levels of government working together so quickly. We will keep you updated as more details emerge, and continue to advocate for long-term solutions to improve the Bruce Highway and upgrade the Inland Freight Route to ensure better connectivity and resilience for our region. The Macrossan is predicted to go over again today, prevent access through Charter Towers, so again we will have roads closed on all 3 sides of the city. 🚨 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱: 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 Yesterday, together the Townsville, Hinchinbrook, and Cairns Chambers of Commerce are calling on the Federal and State Governments to take immediate action to rebuild the Ollera Creek crossing on the Bruce Highway near Mutarnee north of Townsville —a critical transport and economic lifeline for North and Far North Queensland. The Bruce Highway is essential infrastructure connecting the regions that has once again been cut off by flooding, causing widespread economic and social disruption: 👉🏻 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 & 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 – Disruptions between the Cairns Distribution Centre, Townsville, and beyond are leaving businesses without stock, or able to trade resulting in significant losses. 👉🏻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 – Patients needing urgent medical treatment at Townsville Hospital are stranded, putting lives at risk. 👉🏻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 & 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – Workers are unable to commute, causing financial strain on businesses and communities. 👉🏻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 & 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 – Emergency services and recovery efforts are delayed, weakening regional resilience. We are calling on the Government to fast-track funding and deploy emergency construction crews to ensure North and Far North Queensland’s economy and communities are not left stranded. This is a critical issue that affects all of us. Share this post, tag decision-makers, and help us push for urgent action. Yesterday we uploaded the Townsville Chamber of Commerce’s federal budget submission, 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙣 𝙀𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙣 𝘼𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙖. This submission, 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 represents thousands of businesses struggling with unaffordable or unavailable insurance. How ironic that last year’s submission deadline coincided with the day TC Kirrily crossing Townsville, and here we are typing away with the rain lashing around us, about the same unresolved crisis. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼: 👉🏻 Secure finance and investment 👉🏻 Meet legal and contractual obligations 👉🏻 Rent commercial space 👉🏻 Trade locally and internationally Yet, insurance is becoming more unaffordable and unattainable in Northern Australia, leaving businesses exposed and economically vulnerable. Without attainable and affordable insurance, investment effectiveness is severely limited. 𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 👉🏻 Amend the Reinsurance Pool to deliver real premium reductions for business 👉🏻 Ensure insurers cover all of Australia, not just low-risk areas 👉🏻 Establish a National Insurer to guarantee coverage where the private market fails. The government are the insurer of last resort already 👉🏻 Abolish Stamp Duty & GST on insurance—it’s an essential service! 👉🏻 Enforce transparency so savings actually reach consumers 👉🏻 Invest in mitigation & resilience only when it provides greater affordability and accessibility to insurance. This is not just a Townsville issue—it’s a Northern Australian crisis. We need urgent policy intervention before more businesses are forced to close. We encourage policymakers to review our submission and take action. If you are on the north east coast today - if it's flooded forget it! Absolutely spot on, Amanda Rose! It’s great to see this important conversation getting the attention it deserves across News Corp Australia today. The cost-of-living crisis is well-publicised, but it's crucial we don’t overlook the growing pressures faced by small businesses. Many owners are barely scraping by, sometimes not even earning a minimum wage themselves. With rising insolvencies and quiet business closures becoming the norm, it’s no surprise that more people are opting for the security of a steady paycheck. But this isn't just about survival—it’s about the sustainability and growth of SMEs that are the backbone of our economy. The policy shifts around industrial relations have added a layer of complexity and cost that many small business owners just can’t afford. Not to mention the lack of consistency in how "small" businesses are defined by various government bodies—some say 25 employees, others say 20. This lack of clarity only fuels confusion and red tape. It’s also disheartening to see policies meant for large businesses or government initiatives having unintended consequences for SMEs, especially those tendering for work. On top of that, the rising costs of insurance, energy, and fuel are adding even more strain on already tight margins. Small businesses are simply being priced out of staying competitive, and with rising premiums and limited coverage, many are struggling to keep their doors open. The administrative burden on small business owners is overwhelming, and too many are forced to hire external help to stay compliant with ever-changing rules. This, of course, adds another layer of financial strain. We need simpler, more accessible support systems, so they don’t have to spend unnecessary time and money just trying to keep up with the rules. And don’t get me started on the uncertainty around things like the instant asset write-off! If we truly want to build a sustainable solution to the cost-of-living crisis, stabilising the business environment for SMEs is step one. I fully agree with Amanda: reducing compliance burdens and giving businesses the certainty they need will not only protect jobs but create room for innovation. When SMEs thrive, so does our economy. At Townsville Chamber of Commerce we will continue to advocate to make sure SMEs don’t get forgotten in the next budget. ~ Heidi #townsville #sme
