A Townsville City Council instrumentation apprentice is swapping his screwdrivers for a suit as he heads to Brisbane to represent North Queensland in the Queensland Training Awards state final this weekend.   Council apprentice Sean Malcolm took out the prestigious Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year award at the North Queensland regional final in July.   He’s set to take on six other apprentices from around the state at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday night.   Sean said it was he was honored to take out the regional final and to be able to represent Council on the stage in Brisbane.   “You don’t choose a career like being an electrician to receive awards, but after completing my electrical apprenticeship in December and taking on a Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control, it’s great to get a bit of recognition for all the hard work,” Sean said.   “I took on a role at Council because of the varied work and experience you get in all sorts of things.   “One day you could be working in the water treatment plant, the next day you’re working on traffic lights or you’re on the way to Magnetic Island or the Strand to do maintenance.”   Following in his electrician father’s footsteps, Sean said he was excited to see what was in store for his career after finishing his Instrumentation apprenticeship.   “Dad’s an electrician and he said getting an apprenticeship at Council would give me experience across the board, and he certainly wasn’t wrong,” he said.   “After completing my electrical apprenticeship in December last year, I decided to take on a Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control to expand my skillset and my options in the electrical industry.   “I’ve learnt so much and it always helps being surrounded by a great team, so I’m excited to see what Saturday brings in Brisbane.”   Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Joe McCabe said Council was proud to employ more than 50 apprentices and trainees and he wished Sean all the best in the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training’s State finals.   “Council is proud to be able to train the next generation of skilled workers and with apprentices like Sean on the books I think our region’s future is looking bright,” Mr McCabe said.   “Council went into the North Queensland regional finals with four finalist nominations, with two in the apprentice of the year category, one in the trainee of the year award and Council being named as a finalist in the Large Employer of the year category, so I’m really proud of all of our team and their hard work.   “We all know there is a shortage of skilled workers and with a jam-packed pipeline of projects in North Queensland’s future, I’m pleased Council is known for training the best of the best.   “We wish Sean the best of luck and are backing him 100 per cent.”   For more information, visit https://bit.ly/47cLiwR

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽 Aspiring artists from across Townsville can now enter to have their designs painted on the basketball half-court at Kirwan’s Willowbank Park.   The competition is open until September 17, with the winning design being painted onto the half-court and the artist receiving a $1500 artist fee.   Divisional councillor Vera Dirou said all Townsville residents could try their hand at designing an artwork for the half-court.   “We’ve made this competition as easy as possible by popping a template of the court and a colour palette on our website. These tools will help our entrants create an incredible design that will enhance the space at Willowbank Park,” Cr Dirou said.   “Council is very proud to support both established and emerging local artists. The pieces created by our city’s street artists enhance our neighbourhoods and help create a brighter and safer community.”   North Queensland Garth Jankovic has been instrumental in establishing and growing Townsville’s art scene during the past 30 years and said street art brought huge value to Townsville.   “Townsville’s street art scene has a great mix of Euro and First Nations art, which represents our demographic really well,” Jankovic said.   “This competition is a great way for aspiring artists to take that next step and potentially see their work in full scale. It’s all about embracing your style and having a good crack, you never know if you don't have a go. This opportunity could be a manoeuvre that takes you on an amazing journey as an artist through life.”   Entries into the Willowbank Basketball Half-Court design competition are open until 10am AEST Tuesday September 17.   To download the template and approved colour palette and submit your entry, visit https://bit.ly/3T31ZoL

Last week Council successfully conducted four in-depth engagement sessions with industry peak bodies, major developers, government agencies, and key stakeholders.   Led by Council and consultants 2EH Consulting, the sessions were well-received with industry representatives and state agencies expressing their appreciation for our proactive and collaborative approach.   A key highlight was the introduction of an innovative online mapping tool, a first among Queensland councils. This tool, designed to gather feedback on growth projections and development timelines, enhances Townsville’s long-term planning.   The feedback gathered in these sessions will be vital to inform the growth model and the subsequent draft amendment to the Local Government Infrastructure Plan.

Council’s strong focus on delivering core services has been bolstered by the recent arrival of a new innovative hedging machine, saving time and increasing worker safety. Councillor Andrew Robinson said the $270,000 piece of machinery would improve the safety of Council workers and aim to cut down time traffic lanes are closed for hedging. “Townsville has hundreds of hedges lining median strips that our crews maintain on a rotating basis. In order to trim these safely we often have to close lanes for hours at a time to keep our people and road users safe,” Cr Robinson said. “The goal of this new hedger is that we can complete the job more efficiently and can greatly reduce the time lanes are closed to traffic.” Councillor Robinson said the efficiency in time and resources meant Council’s gardening crews could focus on maintaining other areas throughout the city. “This new machine is literally cutting down on the time our gardening crews have to spend on the tools hedging, which is a manual repetitive task, further improving our workers health and safety,” Cr Robinson said. “By rolling out our new innovative piece of machinery all the way from Europe, these gardeners can focus on the many other jobs on their to-do list. “Council owns and maintains well over 300 parks, so there is plenty of green space and work involved to keep our city looking pristine.” “We ask that if you see our crews maintaining our median strips or if you see our new orange hedger on the road, please slow down for their safety and your own.” The new machine is a 3.5-tonne, single seater enclosed vehicle with a mechanical boom and vacuum system that sucks-up and stores leaf material as it is cut, saving on crews having to dispose of waste manually.

Last week Mayor Troy Thompson met with Powerlink’s Project Director Tom Dockray who presented Council with a copper shovel from the CopperString 2032 workforce accommodation sod-turn last month, as well as a project update. CopperString will make a significant contribution to the North West Queensland region by not only Connect Queensland’s North West Minerals Province (NWMP) to the national electricity grid, but creating hundreds of jobs in the process and unlocking more than $500 billion in new critical minerals in North Queensland.

𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 is being made easier thanks to the roll out of free sessions with Council’s procurement and safety experts up until October 3.   Mayor Troy Thompson said as the organisation continues towards its goal of having 90 per cent of its procurement expenditure going to local businesses by 2026, the sessions were a helpful tool for businesses wanting to do more work with Council in the future.   “Council focuses heavily on spending locally and engaging local businesses where it can, so we want to make sure people know what boxes they need to tick from a procurement angle,” Cr Thompson said.   “These sessions are where local business owners and staff that want to, or are applying to do business with Council can book in for a one-on-one meeting with a Council staff member to better understand what’s required to do business with Council.    “Council has run these Doing Business with Council sessions over the last four years and they’ve been extremely popular breaking down any communication barriers and misconceptions.”   Councillor Thompson said as an organisation with safety at the front of mind, businesses could request to add an element of safety to their meeting request.   “Safety plays a massive role in contractor requirements when doing business with Council so by pairing these sessions with our safety team if requested, we can drill down on what exactly is required from businesses when they are tendering for Council works,” Cr Thompson said.   “I urge any businesses who want to find out more about Doing Business with Council, to book a session via our website, sessions are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, until October 3.   “I’m looking forward to seeing even more local businesses work with Council to help grow Townsville in the next twelve months.”   To learn more or to book into a Doing Business with Council Safety Session, visit https://bit.ly/4cFMVV6
