A really value episode of Transparent VC Podcast 👇

It was great to have Wayne Gerard join us on the Transparent VC Podcast to chat about his journey, the life of a founder, his work as a former Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, and his approach to investing at Prtnr. I'm not sure there is an innovation-ecosystem role that Wayne hasn't performed at some point, and it's great to see his passion for helping founders expand and transition to investment following his recent exit. Wayne and I first met 10 years ago, when we were both part of the Startup Working Group that developed many of the initiatives that later became Advance Queensland and The Precinct. He's a passionate contributor that always leads with the question "how can I help?" Full episode linked in the comments.

    Founder & Investor @Prtnr

I’ve learnt lots of lessons over my career as a founder and CEO. It was great to chat with Aaron Birkby Don McKenzie from Tribe Global Ventures about my experience confounding and building RedEye, my time helping to build the Queensland startup ecosystem, as Queensland Chief Entrepreneur and helping to establish the #VCDF at QIC Hope there’s some ideas or relevant thoughts in this podcast for you or your network. Thanks to everyone who played a role in my journey, the awesome teams, customers, partners and investors I worked with so far. I look forward to the next stage as we build Prtnr #startups #climatetech #healthtech #Queensland #innovation

Some great reflections from James Deck on his participation on our UK market expansion mission, made possible by City of Gold Coast and Trade and Investment Queensland.

As I head home from a successful UK Trade Mission, I want to extend a huge thank you to City of Gold Coast and Trade and Investment Queensland for their generous support in funding my participation. Special thanks to Tribe Global Ventures for organising an excellent program that facilitated meaningful connections and insights. 🌍🤝 A special mention goes to Aaron Birkby and Don McKenzie from Tribe Global Ventures for their invaluable expertise, experiences, and connections shared throughout last week. Their insights into international trade and scaling innovative solutions have sparked fresh ideas that we're eager to explore further, both locally and internationally. 🚀💡 London Tech Week has been instrumental in expanding our horizons and reinforcing our commitment to innovation. The connections made with industry peers have been truly enriching, and I look forward to exploring potential collaborations in the near future. Thank you once again to everyone involved for making this experience invaluable! 🌟

What a week! A few thoughts from the amazing founders that joined our 2024 UK expansion mission. Keen for the US in Oct?

Here's a short clip of just some of the feedback and takeaways from our UK mission delegates after the last week in London. Despite 12 years of running trade missions, I still feel some trepidation in the weeks leading up to a mission, wanting to ensure we deliver value to founders who have invested their time and money to join us on the other side of the world for a week. So it is very meaningful to me to hear their feedback when it is all done and dusted. Massive thanks to all our delivery partners City of Gold Coast, Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, Trade and Investment Queensland, Advance Queensland, Department for Trade and Investment, Department for Industry, Innovation and Science, Department for Business and Trade, Elizabeth Varley, Chris Milligan, Sumant Datta CPA MBA GAICD, Louise Cantillon, Don McKenzie, Jack Butler, and especially Maren K Eibner for the huge amount of work she does in crafting the schedule and managing all the logistics, planning and delegate onboarding.

We know every podcast says this about every episode: but trust us- this really is a great episode with a lot of actionable ideas for founders and investors.

Need a podcast for your walk to work?! I was so blown away to be asked to speak on the Tribe Global Ventures podcast. Fair to say that I'm a massive fan of everything that Don McKenzie, Aaron Birkby and Jack "Statham" Butler are doing! Was such good fun, although not sure Don will ever forgive me for the put down of his "Conjoined Triangles of Success" diagram. Sorry I mean GTM diagram. On the Podcast we talk about everything from Losing Product Market Fit to Funnel Metrics, and why so many companies at the scaleup stage get it wrong. #vc, #podcast, #saas Be great to get any thoughts on the topics covered. There's many points in this episode of Transparent VC Podcast relevant to founders and investors: - The power and importance of complementary teams. - Its getting harder to get to series A. - The power of a structural competitive advantage: pricing power. - Don't be a Geoff Bozo and over complicate things. - The power of simple cold emails. - Traditional outbound sales is dying. - The creativity required in building awareness. Check it out!

A lot of thought provoking articles in this weeks episode of Transparent VC Podcast. We discussed David Swan's article about what's next for Scott Farquhar after stepping down from Atlassian. The article highlighted the complementary nature of Scott and Mike Cannon-Brookes, and what founders and investors can learn. Bronwen Clune's article on criticism of equity crowdfunding by the VC community. We discuss Chris Gillings comments on the sector and the dropping of equity crowdfunding numbers from the Cut Through Venture's report. We discuss Matt Vitale's defence of the sector and our perspectives on crowdfunding within the ecosystem. Nick Bonyhady's article on the $1b invested in PsiQuantum and our thoughts on this move by the government. Other discussions included: - LinkedIn posts by Jason Andrew on Xero's strong pricing power, and not being a "Geoff Bozo". - Harry Stebbings pointing out how exceptional founders are exceptional at cold emails (the latest ep of 20VC is awesome btw). - Adam Robinson giving more evidence to what we're seeing- traditional outbound is dying. Ok so maybe this is a big extreme 🤣 but hiring from the next lifecycle phase in the sequence, rather than from big companies many phases away, helps reduce hiring failure. People that come from large organisations don’t often realise the power of the brand, the amount of resources at their disposal, or the river of warm leads to convert. They are often order takers, not sales people. Early stage requires a certain mindset and approach. A hustle. A no excuses mindset. TEC- Talent, Experience and Culture. People often hire from big companies because they are trying to buy experience and/or networks. Concentrate on talent and cultural fit- people with those ingredients, provided the right support, will often outperform. Check out our other posts if you’re not sure what we mean by the different phases of the lifecycle.

The excuses for not hitting budget when founders in scale-ups hire sales people from large ageing organisations.

What a night! This week we hosted 50 investors and founders at Mick & Stef Dempsey's farm to hear how they manage their family office and approach venture investing. The weather and last minute change of venue added to a spectacular night, kicking off with running guests up the hill to the homestead via the farm buggies, to share a drink on the deck around the open-fire BBQ and firepit. We were spoilt with both an amazing venue and a mix of super interesting guests. Huge thanks to our shareholder and Venture Partner Michael Dempsey for hosting us and sharing his journey over the fireside chat. Don McKenzie, Jack Butler, Aaron Birkby

Founders - Do NOT fall into the trap of being overly product-focused! It's not just about the bells and whistles of your product; it's about understanding the human element behind it. As Don McKenzie, highlights - “Your story doesn't matter. Your product doesn't matter. It's the counterparties' story that matters. You've got to work out a way to open the door to get into their story." My Top 7 Lessons from Don 👇 1) There is great value in offering genuine, non-judgmental help to founders 2) He highlights the critical learning opportunities that come from discussing failures openly, encouraging a culture where mistakes are seen as growth points 3) Don's approach to angel investing and advising startups is deeply rooted in empathy, deriving from his own experiences as a founder and operator 4) While recognising the importance of passion, he advises focusing on the structural elements of building a startup, stressing the need for sound strategies and realistic goals 5) Understanding the people side of tech and business, he values building a network that brings collective benefits, emphasising the significance of each addition to the network 6) He shares the importance of adapting your product to solve real problems that customers are willing to pay for, stressing on achieving product-market fit with a clear value prop 7) Above all, Don underscores the importance of staying true to one's values and making decisions that align with one's authentic self and the well-being of others involved Full SaaSy Talk Unfiltered Episode and Newsletter OUT NOW!
