The work of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia is firmly grounded in Gospel values, reflected and articulated by the church since the late 1800s in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Those enduring values and principles are as relevant now as they ever were. As Vincentians the dignity of every human being is at the core of our work. We oppose individualism as we commit to the common good. And we encourage the empowerment of people through participation at whatever level might be possible. -- We stand with others who share these values and above all we defend the preferential option for people living with the structural causes of poverty and disadvantage. In addition, we share the care of our common home. These principles guide us through economic, advocacy, personal and spiritual encounters. They attract people, including many who may have little or no other connection to Church, to contribute their time, their talents and their love to our work. -- For all of us involved in the life and work of the Society, we can be continuously renewed, affirmed and inspired by reflecting on the example set by those who came before us. About us
The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia (Vinnies) has more than 45,000 members and volunteers, who provide practical frontline support, advocacy and friendship for the most vulnerable members of our community. More than 13 percent of the Australian population are living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 percent of wages, and a quarter of Australians live with a long-term health condition or disability. Under our country’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people struggling to survive. The St Vincent de Paul Society is deeply committed to assisting people in need and reaches out to millions of Australians every year through a range of services including home visitation; volunteer-run shops; youth programs; soup vans; assistance for asylum seekers and refugees; compeer programs for people experiencing mental illness; education and tutoring; accommodation services; and health services. The St Vincent de Paul Society welcomes an opportunity to work closely with all members of our community – visit www.vinnies.org.au to get involved.

Vinnies Youth Members from #NSW converged at St Leo’s Catholic College last month as part of the Ignite Catholic Youth Conference. -- We were fortunate to present volunteering opportunities with St Vincent de Paul Society NSW to attendees, highlighting how young people can put their faith into action by supporting those in need, making a positive impact, and living out the core values of charity, compassion, and justice. -- The Society was born out of enthusiasm and boundless energy of youth – we are delighted to see that spirit living on today. If you can donate a few hours of your time to community volunteering pls visit our website to sign up: https://lnkd.in/ghgjBfZ3

809,300 free meals were served to Victorians in crisis - each meal offering more than just nourishment – it provided hope and comfort during incredibly difficult times. 🍲For many, it was a lifeline that brought relief and the promise of brighter days ahead. Your generosity can help ensure that even more Victorians receive the support they need. Please donate to Vinnies Victoria appeals and be part of a positive change for those who need it most. 💙 https://lnkd.in/g7CkMgUC #StVincentdePaulSociety #Vinnies #Victoria #Vic #GoodWorks

Australia is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Yet 3.3 million Australians, including 761,000 children live in poverty. We support ACOSS’ calls for actions to end child poverty. Like and share this tweet to support our call. Read ACOSS poverty snapshot here: vinnies.link/ACOSS

Today is a World Food Day. Celebrated first in 1979, World Food Day promotes awareness of hunger and action for the future of food, people, and the planet. Under the veneer of a prosperous economy, we hide an ugly truth - 2 million Australian households (21%) did not have enough to eat last year. It is unacceptable to have hungry people in a country like ours. Please like and share to raise awareness.

The dignity of every Australian means honouring their rights and empowering them to reach their life potential, whatever their background, circumstances or beliefs. -- Australia’s economic growth for almost 30 years has improved our living standards. Yet over 3.3 million people, including 761,000 children, have been left behind and are living in persistent poverty. -- Households relying on income support are five times more likely to experience poverty and struggle to make ends meet. Young people, single parents, Australia’s First Nations People, the long-term unemployed and those living with disability or ill-health are particularly vulnerable. -- Together we can end poverty in Australia. Share this post and tag your local MP to act.
