Exploring the Connection Between Geography, Fieldwork, and Surveying at Cylinder Beach on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) 🌍📡 Field work transforms classroom concepts into real-world experiences for Wavell State High School students. Recently, our students embarked on a field trip to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) to explore the intersection of geography, geospatial technologies, surveying, and environmental analysis collecting both qualitative and quantitative datasets. Equipped with Survey123, DJI drones, and FieldMaps for ArcGIS, Insta360 footage and Eurofins water testing, students collected data on coastal erosion, water quality, vegetation changes, and landform dynamics. This hands-on experience provided a firsthand look at how surveyors and geographers measure, analyze, and visualize the landscape. We were lucky enough to run into senior students from Marsden State High School and invited them to join a great talk and information session from the amazing local Dick Copeman. Back in the classroom, we processed the collected data using GIS software, translating field observations into actionable insights. By integrating spatial analysis with environmental management, students gained a deeper appreciation for the critical role of surveying in examining local land cover change and coastal protection. Experiences like this bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing students for careers in geography, surveying, and environmental science. Last Thursday Wavell State High School students were lucky enough to attend the NextGen Planning Summit in Fortitude Valley at The Precinct. Convened by the Queensland Young Planners and supported by the Planning Institute of Australia it provided a range of presentation from planning for the Olympics to designing airport precincts and understanding universal accessibility, all highlighting the strong connection between geography and the planning industry. Thank you to Nicole Bennetts RPIA for helping us get tickets and to all the industry people that chatted with our students. Consensus from the boys was that morning tea was on point.
