All teachers wear many hats and Sam Ubank is no exception - Secondary Drama and English teacher at Pimpama Secondary College, Highly Accomplished Teacher and Teach Queensland Ambassador. She recently shared some insights about her teaching journey with us. ‘My mum and grandad were both teachers, and I got inspired watching my mum teach. From primary school I just knew it was what I wanted to do when I was older,’ Sam explained. At Griffith University, Sam studied a Bachelor of Applied Theatre and a Diploma in Education. Naturally, this led her into teaching high school Drama. ‘I absolutely love teaching Drama, no day is the same, no cohort is the same and no day is ever boring. It’s so much fun.' Sam started her teaching career in Townsville at Kirwan State High School where she met her now husband, who is also a teacher. After two years in Townsville, they transferred to the Gold Coast and now both work at Pimpama Secondary College. ‘I reached a point in my career where I knew I wanted a new challenge, but with leadership roles it means less time with my students and in the classroom, which is what I love doing most.’ When Sam discovered the Queensland College of Teachers Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher Certification, it felt like the perfect opportunity for her. ‘It meant I got to stay in front of my class doing what I love, but it was also the best process of self-reflection. It was incredible professional development. I would highly recommend it.’ Eligible state school teachers have the opportunity to pursue this voluntary national certification while remaining in the classroom. Occupational therapy: what is it, and how can our students benefit from it? In recognition of Occupational Therapy Week, we talked to Genevieve, occupational therapist based at Rosella Park School in Gladstone to find out. In her role, Genevieve supports students with disability gain their full potential to access, participate and achieve in all aspects of their schooling lives. This includes learning, interacting with others and school activities that are meaningful to the student. ‘I get to travel to different schools and spend time in classrooms to really understand the strengths and needs of the student, and the nuances of each classroom to be able to work with school teams, families and the student to implement strategies and adjustments to achieve their goals,’ she told us. Her days vary between time in classrooms with students, meeting with school leadership teams and admin work. Genevieve says her favourite part of working as an OT is the connections she gets to build with others. ‘It is a privilege being a part of these students’ lives and helping them succeed at school. Working in the department has provided such a wide variety of experience to really build my skills as an OT. There is such a wealth of knowledge across the OTs in the state and plenty of support through supervision and mentoring to implement best practice.' Since moving to Central Queensland in 2021, Genevieve has worked as a school-based occupational therapist and has recently taken on a senior position. 'I have had access to internal and external professional development to build my clinical knowledge and professional skills. I have been able to learn more about self-regulation, toileting, handwriting and professional skills such as communication and negotiation. I have really enjoyed the opportunity for multidisciplinary approaches within the department often working with physios, speech-language pathologists, nurses, psychologists and social workers. 'The flexibility of the job is an incredible perk, particularly the ADO agreements to work more during term to take time off during school holidays. This has been so supportive to be able to regularly return home to visit family and friends. We asked Genevieve about her life outside work: ‘Like the majority of people in their mid to late 20s, I have become a novice runner. Having flexible start and finish times allows me to make sure I have time for the things I want to do outside of work like going for a run. Running into teachers and students at the local Parkrun always reminds me of the pivotal part schools play in the community and the flow on effect our services can have.’ A big thank you to Genevieve and all our amazing occupational therapists in state schools across Queensland! 👏 💪 Find out more about occupational therapy in Queensland state schools: https://lnkd.in/gp6WSsXu #OccupationalTherapyWeek Occupational Therapy Australia
