📣 Announcing Australia's first Athena Swan Silver Awards! We're very excited to announce that Edith Cowan University and the University of Newcastle have both been awarded the SAGE Athena Swan Silver Award, making them the first Australian institutions to earn this prestigious, world-respected accreditation. The Athena Swan Silver Award recognises an institution's progress to progress towards greater equity, diversity and inclusion. Special congratulations goes to the Athena Swan Leads at both universities, University of Newcastle Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic Excellence) Prof Jennifer Milam and Edith Cowan University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Regional Futures) Prof Cobie Rudd, and their teams. SAGE CEO Dr Janin Bredehoeft congratulated both universities on this significant milestone: “The Silver Award does not represent a destination, but rather honours an organisation’s ongoing effort and deep engagement with the process of honest reflection and incremental change. The Silver Award represents the distance an institution has travelled while engaging in the SAGE framework.” “Milestones like this are never reached alone: the SAGE Athena Swan Silver Award is the achievement of many. Congratulations to everyone at both institutions who continue to drive their equity, diversity and inclusion work forward.” Read more about what the two universities have been able to achieve: https://lnkd.in/gw9TN5dW #AthenaSwan #EDI #DEI #DiversityinScience #DiversityinSTEM #DiversityinHigherEducation #DiversityinResearch

📣 BREAKING: SAGE has been granted $7.1 million over five years to deliver an expanded accreditation framework to improve diversity in the Australian science workforce. The funding comes from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR), and was announced last night by the Hon Ed Husic MP, Minister for Industry and Science, at the 2024 National Youth STEM Summit 40th Anniversary Dinner. The funding will enable SAGE to increase resources, tools and support for diversity initiatives in independent Medical Research Institutes and develop new supports for the Vocational Education and Training sector. The accreditation framework will ensure that STEMM disciplines can access and retain the best talent, and meet the workforce needs of the future. READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/gfnsPjbC The funding will enable SAGE to increase resources, tools and support for diversity initiatives in independent Medical Research Institutes and develop new supports for the Vocational Education and Training sector. The George Institute for Global Health is a medical research institute that has been participating in the SAGE framework since 2019. Chief Executive Officer Professor Anushka Patel reflected on the impact SAGE has made: “The tailored tools and supports provided by the SAGE Framework have been invaluable in improving our support for parents and carers. "This new funding will mean that SAGE can expand its reach to ensure that the medical research sector can attract and retain the best researchers, and support them throughout their careers to tackle important medical and public health challenges.” SAGE Chair Libby Lyons celebrated the news as an important step forward for the sector: “This funding demonstrates the depth of the Australian Government’s commitment to ensuring diverse and inclusive science workplaces. "By enabling SAGE to implement our rigorous, proven framework, the Department of Industry Science and Resources will be setting the standard for inclusion in Australian STEMM, maximising the potential of our diverse population and future-proofing our scientific workforce.” Mathematician and SAGE co-founder Professor Nalini Joshi AO said “SAGE was established with widespread agreement in the Australian Scientific Community that cultural change was needed to enable all scientists to thrive in Australia. It has been wonderful to witness SAGE’s consistent impact over a decade with dynamic, reflective processes based on rigorous tools to enable systemic change towards true equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education and research." “It’s very encouraging to see SAGE’s impact recognised with this funding, which will allow it to expand and scale up their transformative work to the whole STEMM workforce.” #DiversityinSTEM #DiversityinScience

The $3.8 million investment boost in the game-changing Superstars of STEM program will powerfully elevate diversity in science and technology and inspire girls and women to study STEM subjects. The funding – announced last night by Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic MP – pays for the program to run until 2030, and provides for an increased focus on reaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences. Superstars of STEM is run by Science & Technology with funding from the Australian Government. The program takes women and non-binary scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians, and gives them the skills, training, and support they need to turn themselves into highly-visible role models in the media. Since 2017 it has created 210 Superstars of STEM, including such well-known scientific media commentators as whale expert Dr Vanessa Pirotta, infectious diseases expert A/Prof Kudzai Kanhutu, and Gamilaroi astrophysicist Karlie Noon. The program was praised in the recent Pathway to Diversity in STEM review as one that was making a tangible difference and shifting the dial in getting more women and girls into STEM study and careers. Applications for the next intake of the program which begins in 2025 are open now. https://lnkd.in/gVVPjdCp #SuperstarsOfSTEM Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Australian Government

Nothing silly about it Laura Driessen. :) A beautiful video of how diverse the jobs are in #STEM and some amazing superstars in them.
Postdoctoral researcher and science communicator at the University of Sydney. Brand Ambassador for Rise & Shine Education's Orbit Centre of Imagination.
About two weeks ago I had a silly** idea to make a video to show case a few of the amazing STEM pros who are part of the current cohort of the Science & Technology Australia Superstars of STEM. And of course these absolute legends immediately jumped in to make it happen. These are just a few of the fabulous scientists that are part of the current cohort, and applications are now open to join the next cohort. So if you or someone you know would like to be part of future shenanigans (as well as amazing training, experiences, and confidence building), send them this link and tell them to apply by the 1st of September https://lnkd.in/gUanaaYv I can truly say that we now have a community of supportive STEM pros lifting each other up on our journeys 🌟 Superstars in order of appearance: Dr Laura Driessen - astronomer Dr Melissa Humphries - statistician Dr Adelle Goodwin - astrophysicist Dr Eliza Middleton - ecologist Dr Sarah Scholten - laser physicist Dr Christina Maher - biomedical engineer Sally Hurst - palaeontologist Dr Taylor Szyszka - synthetic biologist Dr Flora Hui - vision scientist & optometrist Dr Tatiana Soares da Costa - plant biochemist Professor Kirsten Benkendorff - ecotoxicologist Dr. Rachelle Kernen - energy geoscientist Paula Wasiak - conservation biologist Dr Kelsi Dodds - neurophysiologist Dr Caitlyn Forster - entomologist Dr Charlotte Birkmanis - shark biologist Dr Jessica Bohorquez A. - water engineer Associate Professor Karen Livesey - magnetician Professor Prue Francis - marine scientist Associate Professor Theresa Larkin - anatomist Dr Susi Seibt - (bio)chemist Edited together by the amazing Dr Caitlyn Forster ** The initial idea was a little silly because of the reel I was inspired by. But it certainly turned into a fun and beautiful way to demonstrate the diverse STEM professionals in the Superstars program (though there are many more superstars than we could showcase in this one reel) and the supportive community that we've created

All important in attracting more students into #STEM👍
I had the fantastic opportunity to volunteer at the University of Melbourne Open Day, where I demonstrated various experiments in the Chemical Engineering, University of Melbourne Engineering Lab. It was incredible to engage with future engineers and showcase the hands-on learning experiences that make chemical engineering such a dynamic field. Explaining complex processes to prospective students reminded me of the importance of making science accessible and inspiring the next generation of problem solvers. Thank you to everyone who visited, and to my fellow volunteers and staff for making the day a success! #UniMelbOpenDay #ChemicalEngineering #STEMEducation #FutureEngineers #UniMelb #openday
