Who is Building SA? Meet Rolanda Alicia Machado: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures Rolanda Alicia Machado's journey into the construction industry is driven by her passion for design and creating impactful spaces. After completing a bachelor's degree in architecture, she pursued a master's in construction management, becoming the first woman in her family to enter the field. Now as a Graduate Project Engineer, Rolanda is committed to breaking down gender stereotypes in construction. She also actively participates in initiatives like Railcare, volunteering to maintain railway stations and support sustainability projects. Her efforts reflect a dedication to a future that's not only structurally sound but also inclusive and environmentally responsible. Having been a member of the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) for the past year, Rolanda now serves on the SA Chapter Committee. Her mission on the committee is to enhance professional development by creating opportunities for students to explore the diverse possibilities within the construction industry. She's equally passionate about encouraging women to pursue careers in construction, aiming to inspire the next generation of female leaders by highlighting strong role models and fostering a supportive community. Outside her professional realm, Rolanda finds joy in traveling, exploring new cultures and cuisines, and capturing her adventures through digital art—a creative expression of her journey across different landscapes and experiences. 📣 Meet the 2024 / 2025 Committee! 📣 Adrian Guell | MAIB | Construction Manager-Projects Please tell us about yourself? I started my career as an apprentice carpenter with the MBA-GTS in 1998 and have had various project roles over the last 20 years. I now get to apply some of that experience by providing a project delivery perspective in our new business function and support for our site teams with their projects. How long have your been an AIB Member? Three years What are your passions outside the construction industry? My wife and I have two teenage daughters, so family fills a fair bit of our time outside work. I also enjoy anything golf related and planning family holidays. What are you looking to achieve while on the committee? Arranging high quality CPD events that provide benefit to Members, Students and Graduates. Also, I was fortunate enough to receive Florence M Taylor Award when I was an apprentice, so I would like to promote the Australian Institute of Building to those within the industry who have taken a trade pathway. #advancethroughlearning

📣 Meet the 2024 / 2025 Committee! 📣 Charles Moran | Aff | Committee Member & Partner of Lynch Meyer Lawyers Please tell us about yourself? I am a lawyer at Lynch Meyer Lawyers with a focus on Construction / Building Law. Lynch Meyer has a strong team of Construction & Building Law lawyers. I also helped prepare, and presently lecture, a construction law course at the University of Adelaide, aimed at construction managers. How long have you been an AIB Member? Coming up on three years. What are your passions outside the construction industry? I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three children, aged 3, 7 and 9. I also enjoy playing golf and tennis. What you looking to achieve while on the committee? I am buoyed by the new faces on the Committee for this term. I am hoping to continue to encourage people within the construction industry to involve themselves with the Australian Institute of Building. I am also looking to continue have the AIB put on a variety of different events (including site inspections and training seminars) for members so that South Australian builders remain at the forefront of the industry.
