About us

Based on the crowd-sourced book War Childhood and founded on the principles of social entrepreneurship, the independent, youth-led War Childhood Museum has garnered recognition as the world’s only museum focused exclusively on childhoods that have been affected by war. Through its unique platform, the WCM is able to tackle trauma on an individual level for participants and visitors – ultimately contributing to better understanding for society on the whole. Its first permanent exhibition opened in January 2017, seven years after the project’s inception, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Having proven successful in providing Bosnians of all ages with a rare opportunity to confront the traumas of their recent past without reinforcing ethnic boundaries, the WCM has expanded its activities abroad. Currently, WCM operates in Lebanon, Ukraine, and the United States – becoming an international platform that gives voice to current and former war children. Its quick growth aggregated a lot of attention and facilitated collaboration between WCM and some of the world’s leading universities. WCM has had the privilege of presenting at the largest peace-building, youth, and museum conferences. Its efforts have received media coverage from New York City to Tokyo. The 2018 Council of Europe Museum Prize – one of the most prestigious awards in the museum industry – has been awarded to the War Childhood Museum as part of the European Museum of the Year Awards.

🌟Last week, the War Childhood Museum hosted a symposium titled “Educational Activities in the Museum: New Approaches and Perspectives,” bringing together experts and educators from across Bosnia-Herzegovina and the region. 🌍 Over two days, participants explored innovative, inclusive educational practices, focusing on creating accessible museum spaces for everyone - especially individuals with disabilities. The symposium gathered professionals from renowned institutions such as the Balkan Museum Network, Narodni muzej Kikinda, Historijski muzej Bosne i Hercegovine, among others. 💡 This event reaffirmed our commitment to inclusivity in education and our role as a resource for educators and the wider community. We thank the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Youth of Sarajevo Canton for their support in organizing the symposium. We are happy to share the successful completion of the project "Transforming Lives Through Creativity in Ukraine," which the War Childhood Museum Ukraine completed in collaboration with the Peace of Mind Foundation.

🌍 Empowering Resilience Through Art 🎨 PoM and War Childhood Museum are thrilled to announce the successful completion of our project in Ukraine, where 357 children participated in workshops designed to provide safe spaces for healing and self-expression. In this collaboration, we created environments where children could explore their feelings and experiences, fostering resilience amidst the challenges they face. The project utilized diverse approaches, including art therapy, creative writing, movement classes, and even career-oriented workshops for teens. Through our experiences with various methods and engagement with different age groups, we have gained valuable insights that will inform our future programming and offerings. The feedback we received highlighted the impact of these activities, with children expressing eagerness to participate in future events. Both parents and children provided overwhelmingly positive feedback about the workshops. One parent remarked: "Such meetings distract both children and adults from the difficult present. Thank you for organizing such interesting, entertaining, and informative events." Stories like that of an 8-year-old boy, who found the courage to share his experiences after attending our workshop, reinforce our commitment to creating safe and trusting environments for children. Looking ahead, the War Childhood Museum is excited to incorporate the insights gained from this project into the development of its permanent space in Ukraine. The goal is to continue providing supportive platforms that empower children, nurture their creativity, and facilitate healing. #ArtTherapy #PartnershipForImpact #SafeSpaces
