About us

Airlines for Europe (A4E) is Europe’s largest airline association, based in Brussels. A4E works with policymakers to ensure aviation policy continues to connect Europeans with the world in a safe, competitive and sustainable manner. As a key initiator of aviation's Destination 2050 roadmap, A4E and its members committed to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions for their own operations by 2050. With a modern fleet of over 3,600 aircraft, A4E airlines carried over 718 million passengers in 2023. Each year, A4E members with air cargo and mail activities transport more than 5 million tons of goods, life-saving vaccines and essential medical equipment to more than 360 destinations either by freighters or passenger aircraft.

The European Commission's 2013 proposal to revise passenger rights legislation has come back from the dead. A4E has consistently called for a revision to these rules to ensure that they are clear, consistent and fair, while balancing passenger rights with operational realities. Many stakeholders have their view at the moment including BEUC, the consumer organisation. Our Managing Director gave her reaction to BEUC's perspective in Politico this morning highlighting how it is a vast wishlist that fails to account for economic and operational realities, proposing a framework that is neither practical nor effective in delivering this goal. • Mobility is undergoing a trasformative journey, and multimodal transport seems to be one of its new frontiers. But the question is - are we tackling the right challenges to make it work? ✈️🚆🚌 Ensuring seamless connections between air and rail is a goal worth pursuing. But real barriers, such as limited integration between air and rail tools and fragmented booking systems, still stand in the way. To move forward, we need: 🔹 Improved integration between airline and railway tools - to avoid double billing 🔹 Significant investment for direct rail-air integration 🔹Aligned booking systems - currently, rail tickets open 4 months ahead, flights up to a year Strengthening what already works and closing these gaps will go a long way in improving multimodal travel. #Multimodality #EUTransport #Connectivity

  • SAF is expected to deliver the largest share of CO₂ emission reductions in aviation, playing a crucial role in achieving the goal of Destination 2050 - Europe’s industry roadmap to net-zero aviation by 2050. But today, SAF remains too expensive and insufficiently available - and without urgent action, Europe risks falling behind. What’s at stake? Beyond decarbonisation, scaling up SAF is key to Europe’s energy security and strategic autonomy, reducing reliance on imports and ensuring long-term competitiveness. To deliver, the EU must: ✅ Develop an EU industrial strategy for SAF to accelerate cost reductions and scale up production. ✅ Strengthen financing mechanisms to support the transition while keeping aviation competitive. ✅ Include SAF in the Clean Industrial Deal & Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) to drive investment and ensure a level playing field. SAF is the most effective tool to decarbonise aviation while securing Europe’s leadership in clean energy. Now, policymakers must match industry commitment with real action to unlock its full potential. • Today, the European Commission announced its decision regarding Schiphol Airport under the Balanced Approach Procedure. The decision reinforces that cutting flights should not be the goal—achieving meaningful noise reduction should be, a goal which airlines are fully committed to. Our full reaction 👇

  • What if European airspace could be more efficient, resulting in fewer flight delays and lower flight carbon emissions? A4E presented solutions in a blog focused on the optimum trajectory concept. This approach, which aligns flight paths with airline operational needs, holds the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 7%. Key elements include: ✅ Improved flight planning based on optimum trajectories ✅ Flexible and demand-driven capacity management ✅ Collaborative use of data for smarter airspace management By implementing these changes, Europe’s airlines could see meaningful advancements in both sustainability and efficiency. But for this to happen, policymakers and regulators must act to bring about the changes necessary. It’s time to move from discussions to implementation - Europe cannot afford to wait. • One year after the Antwerp Declaration, yesterday 400 business leaders, industry and worker representatives gathered in Antwerp to discuss the Clean Industrial Deal with @European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. For aviation, the message is clear: Europe needs a stronger, more strategic approach to help the sector remain competitive while advancing sustainability. And to deliver on this, the EU must: 🔹 Set a clear aviation strategy anchoring the sector in the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (#STIP). 🔹 Scale up SAF production through an industrial strategy that accelerates cost reductions. 🔹 Unlock alternative financing mechanisms that support the transition while keeping aviation competitive. 🔹 Invest in next-gen aircraft & ATM innovation to drive efficiency gains. The industry is committed. But commitment alone won’t be enough - we need policies, investments, and regulatory support that match Europe’s ambitions. As we never get tired of repeating, the time for action is now. #AntwerpDeclaration #DeliverTheDeal #Aviation #Competitiveness #CleanIndustrialDeal

  • Competitive airlines and aviation is about more than just fuels. Today's Clean Industrial Deal is a small step but we need to see much more from the European Commission: 🔹 A clear aviation strategy recognising the sector’s strategic importance and anchoring it in the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (#STIP). 🔹 An EU industrial strategy for SAF to accelerate cost reductions and scale up production. 🔹 Stronger financing mechanisms to support the sector’s transition while ensuring its competitiveness on the global stage. 🔹 Investment in next-gen aircraft & ATM innovation to unlock efficiency gains The window for decisive action is closing. The EU must act now and lead the way, ensuring aviation has the right policies, investments, and regulatory support to remain globally competitive in the race to net zero. • Europe’s airspace is fragmented and outdated, forcing planes to take inefficient routes, leading to delays and increased emissions. We can’t let this continue. 🎥 A4E Director Ourania Georgoutsakou explains it clearly and to the point: By reforming our airspace, we could cut up to 10% of CO2 emissions and significantly reduce delays for passengers. It’s a win for the environment, for passengers, and for Europe’s connectivity. Given what is at stake, let's not wait any further👇 #airspace #reform
