Achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to mitigate climate risks 🌍 🔍 Recent research, with Belgian scientist Joeri Rogelj, shows that current emissions could temporarily exceed 1.5°C warming. Permanent exceedance significantly increases the likelihood of climate impacts. Strict emissions reductions in this decade are crucial for planetary stability. Discover how the world's oldest trees reveal the climate of 4,500 years ago. 🌳   Scientists of UGent, University of Arizona, and Belgian Climate Centre have used CT scans of bristlecone pines from California to create a detailed reconstruction of historical climate changes. This groundbreaking technique allows us to better understand the climate system and gain valuable insights into the succession of cold and warm periods in history.   Valérie Trouet, director of the Belgian Climate Centre, highlights the acceleration of current climate warming and how similar historical periods can help us understand future impacts. ‘This research provides crucial knowledge for improving climate models and anticipating what is to come,’ she explains.   ➡️ Read more about this research via De Standaard (Dutch): https://lnkd.in/dyMp49s6

Because of the "urban heat island effect", cities can be several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas. However, this local temperature increase has limited impact on global temperature measurements, because weather stations are often set up in cool places such as parks. To account for changing conditions such as urbanisation, temperature measurements are adjusted.   Rozemien De Troch comments: ‘The urban heat island effect is at its greatest during the night, especially with clear skies and windless conditions.
