High-level policy panel: Towards a Sustainable and Secure Europe at #Think2030 Poland⤵️ 🌍During the panel discussion moderated by Karolina Zbytniewska EURACTIV Poland, experts emphasized that clean energy is key to Europe's competitiveness and resilience. Achieving the 2040 climate goals requires better interconnectivity between EU countries and simplifying access to European funds. 🌱"Denmark will support the 2040 goal of a 90% GHG emissions reduction during its presidency because clean energy means competitiveness and resilience," began Niels Frederik Malskær, Senior Energy Advisor, Embassy of Denmark in Poland. Denmark will be the next country after Poland to hold the presidency of the Council of the EU. "At the beginning, many Danes were sceptical about Baltic Pipe, but after the invasion of Ukraine, everyone was convinced that this way we are building independence," he added. 💶💵"Altogether, the cost of running the current system based mostly on fossil fuels is 270 billion PLN a year, while the investment needed to become more resilient is half of that: Investments to cut emissions – 150B PLN a year (the money is already there)," said Urszula Zielińska, State Secretary, Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska. Attention was drawn to the need to continue climate action, with the 2040 Climate Target viewed as a people-centered transition. Solutions should ensure that polluters bear greater costs. 🔑"#CID is a tool to achieve our climate goals. It needs to be seen as a step further; it’s the tool to combat the triple challenge, not just one. We call for a transition that is people-centered," said Chiara Martinelli, Director, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe. "I would like polluters to pay more," she added. The need for a change in mindset and openness to various solutions was emphasized to avoid the dilemma between climate spending and defense. There were also calls for simplifying processes, effective regulations, and building European value chains. ⚡"The message from business is simple – We need twice as much energy at half the price of energy as we have today. Simplification of processes is really important – it helps businesses run. Regulations protect our businesses, but alone, they won’t change the world; so regulations need to be effective," said Bartosz Czyczerski, CEO, Business & Science Poland. ⚠️"We are all in favor of simplifying difficult things, but we need to ensure that the simplification agenda doesn’t become a deregulation agenda. We have regulations to make it happen. There is no other option to maintain economic growth without climate action," responded Martinelli.

🧡 We were delighted to host the AI Challenger Forum yesterday at Business & Science Poland, organized by our member – Związek Cyfrowa Polska / Digital Poland Association.   The topic of artificial intelligence (#AI) is urgent and highly relevant for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. 👉 AI offers a chance to accelerate the #modernization of #industry, #agriculture, #healthcare, and public #administration. 👉 It also strengthens the #competitiveness of national economies and plays a crucial role in #cybersecurity. 👉 Developing local AI ecosystems means more #investment, knowledge exports, and advanced services. 👉 Our region has tremendous potential – engineers, mathematicians, and programmers from Central and Eastern Europe are among the best in the world. AI can not only help retain talent but also drive the creation of innovative companies locally.   ‼️ This is a topic that calls for cooperation, bold decisions, and a unified voice at the European level. That’s why initiatives like today’s Forum #CEEDigitalCoalition – bringing together experts from academia, business, and public administration – are so important in tackling the real challenges of the future.

Nuclear energy is making a comeback in the #EU Earlier this week, I had the chance to speak with the Polish Press Agency (PAP) about how sentiment towards #nuclear energy has evolved in the EU in recent years (link in the first comment). As I highlighted, we’re seeing a real shift across the board: in the European Commission, the European Parliament, and among EU Member States. There’s growing momentum behind the idea that nuclear energy must be a core pillar of the EU’s decarbonization strategy. But it’s about more than just climate. There’s a broader change happening - a paradigm shift - driven by the EU’s renewed focus on economic competitiveness. Nuclear energy is now seen not only as a tool for cutting emissions, but as a strategic asset for energy security. Becoming less dependent on external suppliers is a major priority - especially for countries like #Poland. For Business & Science Poland, the largest Brussels-based organization representing Polish companies in discussions with EU institutions, the principle of technology neutrality is of utmost importance. To reach climate goals without compromising Europe’s competitiveness, we need access to the full spectrum of zero- and low-carbon technologies - and that includes nuclear. It was a great pleasure to participate in today’s important meeting with representatives of Polish regions and cities, and to present – on behalf of Business & Science Poland – the topic “Clean Industrial Deal – opportunities for cities and regions.” The meeting, organised by the Regional Office of the Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship in Brussels, provided an excellent platform for local authorities from Poland to exchange views on the latest and upcoming European Commission initiatives that will shape the future of the European economy. As I highlighted during the meeting, there is a significant opportunity for Polish cities and regions to engage in the upcoming legislative developments to ensure that the final regulatory outcomes will positively impact local and regional communities in Poland. A big thank you to Malgorzata Wasilenko, Director of the Regional Office of the Warmia-Mazury Region in Brussels, for organising such a timely and impactful discussion.
