Carmeuse is proud to announce the acquisition of 2,300 hectares of land in the region of Formiga and neighboring cities in Brazil, another step in our journey towards #decarbonization and carbon neutrality by 2050. This significant purchase, finalized in August 2024, aligns seamlessly with our business strategy focused on reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring #sustainability. The use of #biomass reduces CO2 emissions by 30% compared to the use of fossil fuels. Furthermore, for each hectare of planted forest, Carmeuse will capture approximately 260 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and the forestry assets acquired have a fixed carbon stock of 306 thousand tons. Recently, Carmeuse Mauritania hosted a workshop on nutrition in collaboration with the Departmental Inspection of Nouakchott South. Led by Nutriconseil, the workshop aimed to educate attendees on the importance of proper nutrition and its impact on health. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, learning about balanced diets, the benefits of various food groups, and practical tips for healthy eating. Nutriconseil’s experts provided invaluable insights into the consequences of poor dietary habits, such as diabetes. Representatives from SOS Diabète Mauritanie highlighted the rising prevalence of diabetes and emphasized early detection and management through proper diet and lifestyle changes. The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged active participation, making it a truly enriching experience for all involved. This summer, Carmeuse Ghana united the students and staff of Essipun School and STMA Basic School in Takoradi, Ghana, for a cause that benefits our planet's future. Together, we planted 300 trees around the school premises. This initiative was part of the broader Green Ghana Day, with the Ghana Forestry Commission playing a pivotal role by generously supplying the trees. The event was a great educational experience for the students, who learned about the importance of trees in supporting life on Earth. At Carmeuse, we are committed to fostering the growth of young minds. This year, the Carmeuse Foundation once again had the privilege of supporting the “Les Jeunes Entreprises” initiative in Belgium through its partnership with Junior Achievement. Our dedicated volunteers worked closely with college students, helping them shape and refine their fictional entrepreneurial projects. Throughout the year, Carmeuse volunteers provided guidance, conducted workshops in schools, and offered their expertise to help students develop their business ideas. Serving as judges during mid-year and end-of-year evaluations, our volunteers gave thoughtful feedback to encourage and support the students’ growth. This initiative has been a wonderful opportunity for students to build a strong foundation in entrepreneurship and gain invaluable life skills. Our volunteers also experienced positive vibes from their volunteering activities. In the words of one of them: “Their social and/or sustainable projects, as well as their positive mindset, gave me a boost of hope for the future of our society!” Congratulations to the students who were part of this great LJE initiative. We are thrilled to share some of our latest initiatives in achieving our decarbonization goals while enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and customer satisfaction. At the Soma Quarry in Turkey, diesel trucks have been replaced with electric ones, which recharge their batteries using gravitational potential energy during descent. This switch has eliminated diesel costs and emissions. Additionally, at the Cedarville Site in Michigan, battery-electric railcars retrofitted with TugVolt technology have been deployed, significantly reducing diesel consumption and CO2 emissions.
