🎺We were thrilled to host the EU Strategy Support Office of Universite de Lorraine (UL) in Brussels this week as part of a staff mobility exchange. ⚡The university became the first French university to join EERA as a member, actively participating in EERA’s Joint Programmes on Digitalisation for Energy, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen, JP AMPEA and JP Geothermal. 🗣️This exchange provided an opportunity for Nicolas Dupuy, Deputy Director for the EU Strategy Support Office at UL and Adel El Gammal, Secretary General of EERA, to share the latest advancements in energy research from both institutions. 💡The EERA Secretariat team also shared developments in its key research programmes, such as wind energy, hydropower and geothermal energy, as well as EERA’s approach to communications and policy advocacy. 🤝Here at EERA, we welcomed our first-ever transatlantic member Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) at our High-Level Policy Conference in Brussels last week! 🌍Following the July association of Canada to Pillar II of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key research and innovation funding programme, UQTR officially joined our expansive research community. 🔎This collaboration is set to bring key added value to EERA, stemming from UQTR’s research expertise in renewable energies, while also providing the university with the opportunity to expand 🔗synergies with leading research institutions across Europe. And that’s not all! The partnership will notably foster enhanced global cooperation in 🔬low-carbon energy research, particularly in hydrogen and bioenergy. UQTR Professor Simon Barnabé and Director of Strategic Research Initiatives Office Yves Monette, Ph. Cette semaine, l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) a marqué sa présence pour la première fois à la Conférence de haut niveau de l’Alliance européenne de la recherche énergétique (EERA), rassemblant à Bruxelles des décideurs publics européens et nationaux, des établissements de recherche, des associations d’énergie, des universités et des entreprises pour discuter des grands défis climatiques, énergétiques et économiques de l’Europe des prochaines années. 🤝 Dans un moment où le Rapport Dragui et les nouvelles orientations politiques annoncées par la présidente de la Commission européenne von der Leyen mettent l’emphase sur la compétitivité verte et la décarbonation de l’économie européenne, l’UQTR s’affirme comme une partenaire international doté d’expertises reconnues internationalement dans des domaines de grand potentiel pour la transition énergétique, comme l’hydrogène et la bioéconomie, dans un cadre de coopération transatlantique favorable, notamment dans le programme de recherche et d’innovation de l’UE – Horizon Europe. 📢The Heitor report is out! Carried out by a Commission expert group led by former Portuguese Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor, the publication 📑evaluates the current research and innovation programme Horizon Europe, while also proposing a vision for the upcoming Framework Programme (FP10). 🗣️Echoing the Letta and Draghi reports, as well as Ursula von der Leyen’s Political Guidelines, this report titled “Act, Align, Accelerate” calls for a boost to EU competitiveness, emphasising the key role of 🔬research & innovation in reaching this goal. The report notably alerts to: ⛓️💥the fragmentation of the EU research programme and administrative burdens faced by researchers 🌱the escalating climate crisis 📈the expansion of generative and disruptive technologies 🌍rising geopolitical competition To address these challenges, the expert group suggests concentrating on 4️⃣ interconnected areas of action: industrial competitiveness, competitive excellence, societal challenges and a robust research and innovation ecosystem. 🎺 Last week, we at EERA hosted our annual High-Level Policy Conference on the key role of low-carbon energy research and innovation (R&I) in driving forward European competitiveness! The conference featured inspiring opening remarks from Janez Potocnik, Co-Chair of the International Resource Panel, who emphasised the need to address Europe’s social, environmental and economic aspects in a 🤝 harmonious manner, while Rosalinde van der Vlies, Clean Planet Director at the European Commission, pointed to the importance of boosting funding in research and innovation. 🔬 The day also saw two insightful panel discussions, with leading speakers in the field 💡 shining a light on the role of research in securing both long-term and short-term EU competitiveness: ➡️The first panel delved into the need to mobilise Europe’s research and technology organisations to limit regional divides in R&I, while also ensuring better connectivity and defragmentation among EU member states. ➡️The second panel focused on the importance of increasingly integrating sustainability into competitiveness, as well as the need in Europe for greater alignment, efficiency and investment to compete globally. 🎬In case you missed it, you can now rewatch the full conference here: https://lnkd.in/eYXN3gYn
