We attended the affordable housing conference at the European Parliament yesterday — Dan Jørgensen (European Commission), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Economic and Social Committee, and the European Committee of the Regions were all there, starting an honest conversation on how to tackle the housing crisis across Europe. It’s very clear this is now a top EU priority. At EPRA, we believe listed real estate is an essential part of the solution. With their transparency and long-term investment strategies, REITs and publicly listed property companies can be a real force in scaling affordable, sustainable housing. The European Commission just unveiled its Communication for the future of the Savings and Investments Union. After actively contributing to the recent call for evidence and providing industry insights and policy recommendations, our Public Affairs team met last week with the Cabinet of Commissioner Albuquerque, responsible for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union. This meeting allowed our Public Affairs department to raise key industry concerns on the upcoming initiatives outlined in the Communication. Among the initiatives presented: - Review of the securitisation framework - Eligibility and clarification of equity investment by institutional investors - EU Savings and Investments Accounts - Financial literacy strategy - Assessment and review of the Pan-European Personal Pension Product (PEPP) framework - Assessment of the potential establishment of a 28th regime - Targeted measures to remove taxation barriers to cross-border investments EPRA is committed to contributing timely and constructively to these crucial initiatives.
