"The Reference Point Network for European civil society on human rights in Latin America."🎯 💡The EU-LAT Advocacy Network presents its new Strategic Framework, outlining the strategic direction and priorities from 2023 to 2028. The Network is not starting from scratch. It aims to consolidate the work undertaken in recent years, so that the Network is the reference point on Latin America before the European authorities in Brussels. This work will continue, based on what has worked so far, namely the significant involvement of the members as part of the Network's identity, a continued focus on the thematic priorities that unite the members and which we have been working on for several years, and the expansion of our advocacy strategies before the EU. 📰 NEWS The #CSDDD is officially published TODAY in the EU's Official Journal. This is a major step towards ensuring companies take responsibility for their harm to #HumanRights & environment What does this mean? - The #CSDDD will officially enter into force 20 days from today (July 26th) But hold on: EU countries then have 2 years to translate it into their own national laws - & yes, it's mandatory. - "Entering into force" means the directive is officially an EU law. But companies won't need to comply just yet, the CSDDD kicks in gradually. The timeline based on company size starts 3 years after it takes effect (around 2027). Why should we support "El Pacto Eco Social" in Latin America?  Erika and I are in Peru for our film impact tour with former Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez and environmental defender Maxima Acuña, when 50+ organizations from Latin America are meeting to “building social dynamics capable of counteracting the dynamics of the current capitalist rearrangement”.  Info here: https://lnkd.in/ekJ-DVyS Why Peru? Well, the #RolexGate is the perfect moment to set the record straight: - #Peru has been facing a political instability in the past 10 years, with governments lasting no more than 1 or 2 years on average. And it would be naïve to believe that "this is just a Peruvian problem". Many foreign states or market actors have a clear interest to keep this instability. The #PDAC Peru Day where Ministers and CEOs meet, is one of these “garage sale” events. ( info: https://bit.ly/4aPaav8 ) - Heavy consumerist economies "need" their resources. According to the EU Commission, for instance, there is a list of 14 critical raw minerals, needed for the #EU industry, that are not in Europe. - Peru is the world’s second top exporter of copper, badly needed for the (bloody) " #greentransition " . Peru is also a world leader in exporting gold, silver, lead, zinc, tin, molybdenum, among others. The results? - No less than 20% (!) of Peru is under mining licences. Not even talking about growing illegal mining, pushed by organized crime and bought up by formal global actors... - Accroding to the #WorldBank, 70% of people live under povertyline in 2023. - Environmental defenders and communities are paying the high price of all this! Now, this is the trend going on in the entire continent. And this is why an eco-social pact is needed! 🌱 We therefore decided to screen our film to students, embassies, NGOs, media, academics, Members of the Congress, as well as defenders and local communities affected by mining (see pictures).
