📰 Fresh off the press: our new report 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, just launched at the Munich Security Conference! Download it here: https://bit.ly/4hVisVW Cables in the Baltic repeatedly sabotaged, devastating storms leaving Ireland in the dark, war raging in Ukraine and price shocks caused by Russia’s fuel disruptions: Europe’s energy system is being challenged like never before. Meanwhile, Europe is decarbonising its economy with clean and renewable power set to meet 60% of final energy use by 2050. As energy needs evolve, so should Europe’s energy security strategy. Our new report with Compass Lexecon shows that we need a new approach to #energysecurity, based on clean electrification to: ⚡ Reduce dependence on fuel imports 📈 Lower exposure to commodities price shocks ⛈️ Boost resilience to crises “The recent year has shown us that business-as-usual in Europe is no longer an option. With the threats faced by our sector, security of supply is becoming an urgent priority that policymakers and regulators must acknowledge”. – said our President and E.ON CEO Leo Birnbaum. To secure Europe’s power supply, we need: - 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: preparedness frameworks should encompass the entire value chain, include all energy vectors, infrastructure, span across longer timeframes and factor in external threats to better identify system needs. - 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: massive flexible capacity will be needed to complement variable renewables – 175 GW should come from new storage technologies and demand side response by 2030. To incentivise investments, capacity mechanisms and flexibility support schemes will be crucial. - 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀: effective price signals should reflect system needs and allow consumers to contribute to security of supply by adjusting their energy use. Voice of European electricity. Leading the energy transition through electrification #WePowerEU #Grids4Speed
About us
At Eurelectric, we envision a future where the European power sector has a net positive impact on the environment and climate in a carbon-neutral world. To make that happen, we are on a mission to lead Europe’s energy transition with clean and renewable electricity How? We work with around 1,500 industry experts to cover all the major trends and developments in our sector - from markets to energy policy, environment & sustainable development, retail customers or networks. Our policy positions, developed with our members, are brought to policymakers and adjacent sectors by our team and members, providing effective representation in public affairs. In our work, we value above all societal engagement, climate leadership, and transparency: - Societal engagement is achieved through championing electrification. It creates jobs, improves air quality, provides customer convenience and reduces our dependence on imported fuels - Climate leadership is demonstrated through commitments, innovation and proactiveness in driving the decarbonisation and electrification agendas at the local, regional, national, and European levels - Transparency is maintained by reporting our papers and letters in our advocacy meetings register, as well as being a signatory of the EU Transparency Register Consensus building is central to our work as we seek to lead the charge on Europe’s decarbonisation agenda. Our regular meetings with the members enable discussions both on technical and strategic levels, aiming to address current sectoral issues and the long-term evolution of our sector. Their country-specific viewpoints and discussions inform our policy recommendations, position papers and studies. These exchanges are extremely valuable as they lead to the development of solid and factual evidence, which is essential when engaging with policymakers on the latest proposals on the EU agenda or setting the trend for future transformations. That’s Eurelectric: leading the energy transition⚡

"I've interviewed a lot of people - but never from a bunker" Cillian O'Donoghue sat down with Maxim Timchenko for a conversation like no other on how DTEK's mission to keep the #LightOn in wartime 👉 https://lnkd.in/e54atwYe From a bomb shelter in the depths of Kyiv, where his team keeps Ukraine’s energy system running despite relentless attacks, the CEO of DTEK shared a powerful message: resilience is not just about survival - it’s about building a future. Watch the full conversation and hear firsthand how the biggest Ukrainian power utility is keeping the lights on, fighting for Ukraine’s future, and shaping the next era of energy 👉 https://lnkd.in/e54atwYe Leo Birnbaum | E.ON | Markus Rauramo | Fortum | Georgios Stassis | PPC S.A. | Kristian Ruby | Marianne Leonet Karu | Yulia Burmistenko | Iryna Zdorevska | Pavlo Bilodid #StandWithUkraine #energyesecurity #FightForLight #LightsOn #StrongerTogether #energysecurity #Ukraine

February 24, 2022, changed everything. For three years, Ukraine’s energy workers have been on the frontlines - not just keeping the lights on, but defending their country’s future. Russia's deliberate targeting of energy infrastructure is an attack on the people, their resilience, and their right to a stable future. Kristian Ruby and Cillian O'Donoghue visited one of DTEK’s attacked power plants. The destruction was staggering. But what stood out even more was the determination of the workers - engineers, technicians, and grid operators - who continue to rebuild, restore, and resist. Their message is clear: Ukraine will not be left in the dark. Europe stands with Ukraine. As we mark the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Ukraine’s energy sector, accelerating its integration into the European grid, and ensuring a future powered by resilience and renewables. 📸 Swipe through to see the reality on the ground. Solutions to improve forward market liquidity should not add unnecessary complexity. The European Commission’s impact assessment should focus on the challenges that market participants face in forward markets, including a public consultation at the end of the process 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebeNbBgn Following the publication of a quantitative assessment of regional Virtual Trading Hubs (VTHs) in Continental Europe by Compass Lexecon, the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) presented its own VTH correlation simulator in January, producing opposite results. In light of differing views about the best approach to estimate the costs and benefits of virtual trading hubs, together with Energy Traders Europe and Europex - Association of European Energy Exchanges we are publishing a follow-up communication to explain key methodological considerations: - Market participants trading on the virtual trading hub will need to rely on a forward hub price to conduct their hedging activities. An approach determining virtual hub prices ex post will lack essential information required by traders. - Proxy hedging provides effective cross-zonal hedging opportunities to market participants across Continental Europe. By contrast, all virtual hub configurations would lead to exclusionary dynamics, with less well-correlated bidding zones being sidelined. Learn more 👇
