EU E-Commerce Communication The Commission’s actions respond well to our campaign #Compliance4all against unfair competition from third-country traders and marketplaces. It's a top priority for the #retail sector because consumers are at risk, and national authorities are struggling to enforce EU rules. Many plans depend on Member States’ and national authorities’ willingness to participate in joint actions. We need them to support the Commission and rebuild European consumers' trust. Two important elements should be added to the Commission’s plans: ✅ Compliance with the GDPR. ✅ Focus on preventing non-compliant products from being purchased 👉 https://lnkd.in/efHmm5ds #DigitalEU #ecommerce #digitalfairness Fabiola V. Did you know: 4% of card transactions generate 30% issuer income? ➡️ Indeed, with 4% of transactions, representing 7% of value, #issuers generate 30% of their #interchange income. 🏦 Using the 1H24 #ECB statistics (https://lnkd.in/eQRYJGXY) we estimate that of the EUR 155 trillion cards transaction value in the euro area, EUR 10,9 billion is done with #commercial cards. With a conservative estimate of 1,2% interchange on commercial and 0,22% for #consumer, issuers have earned some EUR 130 billion on commercial interchange and EUR 317 billion on consumer interchange. Before #IFR, issuers were rather indifferent to consumer and commercial as the same interchange rates applied to both. At the time the share of commercial was around 1%. 🧢 Of course, because IFR did not cap interchange fees for commercial, issuers have actively moved eligible customers to commercial. In 2022 the share of commercial in all European cards transactions was estimated at 4% with 7% in value. 🔝 This has now led to the 30% income from commercial for issuers and the end is not yet in sight, knowing that the #global average of commercial in the cards mix is estimated to be around 10%. ✈️ 🛏️ 🛒 Some merchants categories (#airlines, #hotels, #wholesalers) are even more negatively affected as they have well over 60/70% share of commercial card transactions. EuroCommerce says it is #unfair that commercial was excluded from the IFR, as the same #anti-trust concerns were and are applicable. We predicted this 'waterbed' effect, that we've also seen for #scheme fees that are uncapped as well and have dramatically increased in recent years. 🚨 Competitiveness compass: concrete Single Market commitments by Member States needed 🚨 We are calling for concrete actions, following today's release of the EU’s much-anticipated Competitiveness Compass and the 2025 Annual #SingleMarket and #Competitiveness Report. The communications reveal that Single Market integration, in particular for services, is at a standstill and EU Competitiveness is not increasing fast enough. Services, which account for 70% of the EU's GDP, only represent 7.6% of intra-EU trade. With global challenges ahead, EU institutions and Member States must turn words into concrete actions to remove barriers and enhance overall EU competitiveness. Supporting the diverse range of market players, not just the perceived front-runners will ensure that Europe can thrive on the global stage. A competitiveness strategy must look beyond manufacturing and include other sectors such as services that can support their deployment at scale. Regulatory burden, Single Market fragmentation and lack of enforcement of EU regulation including on online players selling directly to consumers are key barriers.
