About us

The European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) aims at promoting the use of trees on farms as well as any kind of silvopastoralism throughout the different environmental regions of Europe. EURAF's Mission is to “ensure that there is at least 10% tree crown cover on grassland and cropland in all European regions by 2040” - and this will be achieved by supporting efforts to develop awareness, education, research, policy-making and investments which foster the use of trees on farms. With offices in Montpellier (HQ) and Brussels (EU office), EURAF has more than 500 members and a network of 28 Affiliated Entities in 20 EU countries and 5 outside the EU. We work closely with European institutions, policymakers, and agroforestry stakeholders to drive positive change in the agroforestry sector.

  • Our recent publication suggests several considerations for the Forest Monitoring Regulation and the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture: 📝 National forest definitions: to ensure accurate and consistent forest monitoring (and therefore the identification of agroforestry areas which are too small or narrow to be forest), it is crucial to utilise each country's specific legal definition of 'forest' rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all approach. 📊Parcel-by-parcel data: having detailed information about land use and landscape features for each individual parcel of land offers numerous advantages. 🤝Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture: we welcome the initiative’s focus on improving data quality and availability. 🔍Data initiatives: the discussion suggests that the Strategic Dialogue should have also prioritised the Farm Sustainability Tool for Nutrients and the GreenData4All Initiative. 💡EU Rural Data Governance Framework: we emphasise the need for a framework to establish clear guidelines for data sharing, balancing open access with necessary restrictions. • 🏆 Who are the champions of agroforestry tree planting in Europe? A recent #EURAF analysis using the ‘MapMyTree’ counter, evaluates the establishment of new agroforestry systems in Europe with a special focus on the EU mediterranean member states. Several agroforestry champions such as 🌟Life Terra Foundation, 🌟Reforest'Action have emerged, demonstrating remarkable achievements in the number of trees planted on agricultural land as well as the scale of their planting activities. 🌳 This analysis follows the 'EU Forest Strategy for 2030' which sets the goal of planting an additional 3 billion trees across Europe by 2030. However, progress in the EU's tree-planting initiative has been modest 👎, with only approximately 22 million trees planted so far. To meet this ambitious target, 🚨it is crucial for regional and national stakeholders to intensify their efforts in agroforestation. • Another day, another project! We're excited to participate in the #DeepHorizon project kick-off meeting, hosted by the coordinator of the project, Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). As a Horizon Europe (#MissionSoil) initiative, DeepHorizon brings together 18 partners, including EURAF. 🌱 The project aims to improve our understanding of subsoil properties, functions and ecosystem services. DeepHorizon brings together experts and practitioners to unlock knowledge of the subsoil and develop tools to support sustainable subsoil management. The project will collect data 📚, develop tools 🔧, and establish indicators 📊to improve subsoil functions across Europe. #EURAF’s role in the project is to contribute to policy analysis and recommendations in the area. 👉 Watch this space for more: https://lnkd.in/eZH39Y9z

  • ⏱️ The Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) entered into force in August. What's next? Following the establishment of a European framework for nature restoration, it's now essential to focus on national action to ensure agroforestry plays a central role in these plans. When the NRR text was negotiated, EURAF highlighted that ‘Trees outside forests’ 🌾 🌳 must be recognised as crucial solutions for both nature restoration and climate mitigation and adaptation. 💡 Now as the work on the national nature restoration plans is starting, we strongly urge EU member states to include robust methods for better monitoring of agroforestry systems and their positive contribution to nature restoration. This was the message EURAF delegates conveyed in yesterday’s joint Civil Dialogue Group (CDG) meeting on CAP & Environment and Climate Change. • Exciting agroforestry news from Germany! 🌳🌾🇩🇪 Thomas Domin, agroforestry farmer and the board member of Deutscher Fachverband für Agroforstwirtschaft (DeFAF) e.V., has been honored with the highest award from the German Ministry of Agriculture for his incredible work in promoting agroforestry and sustainable land management. 🏆 Thomas is one of the key multipliers for #agroforestry in Germany. As an active EURAF member, he has been cultivating his land in southern Brandenburg with agroforestry for years. His systems contribute to biodiversity, soil and climate protection, and sustainable water management, especially in a post-mining region with dry soils like Lusatia, which is particularly affected by the climate crisis. Let's celebrate Thomas and the power of agroforestry! 👏 Learn more in our blog: https://lnkd.in/dY-5bz5W

  • 💫 We are pleased to introduce the first story in our EURAF blog series #AgroforestryStories - inspiring tales from European agroforestry practitioners. Our first story features Łukasz Nowacki, a dedicated farmer, permaculture designer, teacher, and consultant. Based in central Poland, Łukasz is running a flourishing agroforestry farm Dolina Mgieł (Valley of Mists). 💡 This story demonstrates how #agroforestry practices can effectively restore nature, enhance the land's resilience to climate change, and provide numerous ecosystem services. Łukasz shares insights from his 11-year experience, discussing the challenges and the remarkable benefits he’s witnessed. Discover how agroforestry has transformed his land and contributed to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system. 👉 Read full text here: https://lnkd.in/dJ9ueath 🫵 Don't forget to nominate yourself or others to be featured in our upcoming Agroforestry Stories! https://lnkd.in/d24Vpptj #sustainableagriculture #agroforestry #naturerestoration #permaculture #AgroforestryStories

  • Change begins in the classroom. 🌱The future of farming depends on our ability to transform practices now and cultivate a passion and knowledge among young people and future farmers. Our member, Irish Agroforestry Forum, understands this very well. With their Cultivating Resilience Through Organic Farming with Trees (CROFT) project partners, they promote agroforestry and organic farming practices in Ireland, including primary schools. Apart from other educational activities such as an educational poster series, students from 12 schools receive handcrafted willow baskets filled with organic vegetables 🥕🍅  from local organic farms, Red Shed Organic Farm and Manna Organic Farm. Such initiatives are key to paving the way for agroforestry and addressing the generational renewal of farmers, one of the most pressing issues in the world of farming today. 💡How do you promote agroforestry among young people? Share your experiences in the comments! More about the CROFT project: https://lnkd.in/ebgXdrv6

  • 👍 It is good to hear that the European Commission is speaking our mind. Agroforestry is one of the most promising solutions in the area of carbon sequestration and achieving the targets of the Land use, land-use change and forestry Regulation (LULUCF). We invite the Commission to advocate for #agroforestry further and place it at the centre of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. 🎧 Listen from 1:01:50 to 1:04:00 https://lnkd.in/dGRej9ba
