As I was going through past events at the European Parliament, I came across the event I had co-hosted with the European DIGITAL SME Alliance on the 2030 Manifesto for ‘A European Digital New Deal’; an event during which we discussed respective visions and ideas for the next five years of EU digital policy. Throughout my mandate as MEP, especially as an active member of the Industry Committee and the SME intergroup, I worked relentlessly to ensure that our SMEs get the deserved recognition, understanding, and assistance needed to thrive when it comes to the twin transition. During the aforementioned event, it was highlighted that whilst the SME Relief Package is a key step in the right direction, we must not stop with it. In my address, I had especially emphasised the importance of financing, a level playingfield, interoperability, cybersecurity, and digital skills for our SMEs; moreover, the necessity of forging a European Digital Deal that leaves no one behind. Will the new Commission🇪🇺 do enough to support the EU tech ecosystem, in particular #startups and #SMEs? As Commissioners-designate provide answers ahead of their Confirmation Hearings in the European Parliament, we start getting a clue of what to expect and what not: ✅ #Virkkunen commits to a “top-notch supercomputing capacity” via the AI Factories to develop of European AI models by SMEs and the broader innovation ecosystem. This reflects the need for European computational capacity to de-risk Europe’s digital capabilities from reliance on imported technologies. ✅ #Virkkunen also rightfully states that AI training models, computing infrastructure and data storage throughout Europe must be available to every SME in Europe. ✅ #Sejourné stressed that SMEs are the muscle of EU’s economy, and pledged to launch a European Innovation Act and an EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy to streamline our regulatory framework and facilitate access to venture capital for startups and scaleups. ❌ There is yet not a concrete idea for an industrial policy, where the public and private sectors work together to deliver the key layers of the digital ecosystem, such that Europe can regain its competitiveness and sovereignty: beyond AI, Europe needs to control several digital assets, such as data centres, computing capacity, market places and applications - #eurostack. ❌ It is worth making Europe a good place for #startups. But, we must also make Europe a good place for tech companies that are self-sustainable and continue to do business in our continent, not just those that look for an exit or move abroad.
